Well...my day started off well until I found out that one of my co-workers/team members is being let go. This person is really kind and a team player, they just had some performance issues. (Actually this is the 2nd person in 2 days) I hate that it took this action for the gravity of the situation to hit me. If I had known what was at stake, then I definitely would have taken more one on one time to develop this person and highlight their successes. Damn! I really hate that this is happening.

So of course I have seen/heard of other ppl being let go in the past. However, its totally different when it is someone who reports directly to you. The disappointment is truly indescribable. I have DEFINITELY learned a lesson from this whole experience. We are each responsible for the success of those around us. We cannot make others excel, but we can do our best to equip them to achieve their highest potential. This is where I feel that I failed in this case. I just didn't realize how much of an impact I could have had on this person's future. I will not be making this mistake again.

Hey, though this is a lesson learned, make sure you are feeling the appropriate amount of sadness/guilt. In other words it's not all your fault and it may not be any of your fault.

I'm saying that because everything ain't for everybody. So while you feel like you may not have equipped this person well, others who report to you are still working there/performing at a higher standing. Meaning, this person may not have what it takes for the field. This doesn't make him or her a bad person or bad worker, it just makes them someone who needs to re-think their career path.

This person may find that being let go opens them up to the job they really want or need or didn't even think about becuase they were essentially spending time in a job/career that wasn't right for them.

You know everything happens for a reason, so yes, feel the appropriate amount of responsibility, then let it go and let that person find where they are truly meant to be.

Lastly, I know I wasn't supposed to, but I laughed to hard when I saw that pink slip (before I read the actual post). How you get fired on your lunch and/or bathroom break?

(standing makes no sense there)

:-) I like the pink slip pic. It added a bit of humor to the situation.

Yeah - I'm trying not to be too depressed about the situation. I just hope that better things come along for these folks in the future.
