Honestly, 21 (my senior year in college) was a great year. This is probably the only year (as of right now) that I could relive again and again and again. Now that isn't to say that things aren't great now b/c they most definitely are. However, I just feel like the future has some great things to hold, and I just don't want to stop here.
How about you guys...is there any age that you could just stay forever?
So this week I am looking forward to an awesome night of drinks and entertainment for the Sex and the City premiere.
Next week, I am excited about:
A - Seeing my dad
B - Remodeling my bathroom & part of my kitchen
C - Not having to go to work
D - Getting my nails done
The week after that I am excited about:
A - Seeing my love
B - Warm weather
C - Seeing my parents
D - Not having to go to work
Yay for upcoming events!

So I just did $350 (post tax) worth of damage in Macy's. Now to my credit all of my items added up to over $630 (pre-tax) full price, so I did a great job at leveraging coupons and sales. Plus I may take a $40 pair of shoes back bringing me back down to $300. However, clearly this is waaaaayy more than I wanted to spend. I kinda tend to do more at Macy's than normal b/c I have a $100 monthly allowance there, and its a charge card (clearly easier to run the balance up than normal). However, I'd ordinarily like to keep it to $200 or less. BUT BUT BUT here is the thing...I NEEEEEED these things.
So I ended up getting 2 dresses, 1 pair of slacks, 1 pair of capris, 2 work tops, 2 summer tops, and 1 pair of gold sandals (prob going back). Now since I have lost weight few items in my closet really fit. Most of my clothes are still a size 14 or large. I just can't fit that anymore. Currently I am a 8 or S-M in tops and dresses and a 12 or L in pants and skirts. I have been recycling the same 5 or 6 outfits for the last several months, however, those are mostly winter items that are no longer cutting it now that the weather is warming. As a result, then when I find a decent item that really fits well...I feel like I should get it. I guess I'm just going to have to discipline myself to stay out of the stores for the next several months. I feel as though I got some good items to really enhance my wardrobe, so that's going to have to be it.
Now, let's also say that I can't gain not ONE POUND. The items that I bought fit PERFECTLY, so I'm giong to need to stay in the same size or smaller (only slightly) for these clothes to be long term items. Guess I'll be getting up and hitting the gym tomorrow :-)
So anyway...I really want to make the most of this stage of my life before I progress to the next one. Lost of changes will be happening in 2009, and I want to make sure that I am really and truly prepared for them. So...'What kind of goals do you have?', you might ask. Well a few, and here is how I plan to achieve them.
The good thing is that most of my goals are just a matter of consistently maintaining the habits that I have created:
- Stepping up my cooking skills (This can be done by trying new recipes and keeping up my Sunday night dinners)
- Maintaining a healthy routine (Ideally, I would like to stick with my Sat & Sun swims and Yoga 3x a week. However, I have to weave biking in here somewhere, so that may become my Sat activity)
- Developing my relationship w/God (I plan to continue to read my Bible and meditate twice a week, plus Church on Sundays. I need to be more committed to attending Church at least every other week)
- Fixing up my condo (This project is in the works as my Dad is coming in just a week to help me make several updates. By the time that he leaves I will hopefully only have a few more renovations to make)
- Step up my game at work (I really need to begin operating like a well-oiled machine on the job. I think that I am already ahead of the game and performing at an 'exceeds expectations' level. However, I think that to be in a good place to get promoted, then I need to be at 'greatly exceeds expectations'. In order to do this I really really really need to shake off my procrastinating spirit. It is definitely holding me back. In addition to that I need to begin thinking one step ahead of my managers. By this time next year, I need to be at a place where I am managing upwards...i.e telling my boss what I need them to do in order to wrap up the project, rather than receiving direction from them. This is my biggest and most critical goal.
I hope that you all are taking this holiday weekend, which represents the beginning of a new season, to think about where you are and where you're going. Who do you want to be in life, and how are you going to get there? There really is no time like the present to begin moving towards your future.

Ok, well this one is kind of a cheat b/c I've been making it for a while now. It's semi-homemade pizza.
I start with a Boboli pre-made pizza crust. For myself, the individual sizes are sufficient, but they have med and large sizes if you are cooking for more than one person. I apply a layer of pesto/basil pasta spread. These spreads are usually sold in the pasta aisle as spreads for Italian bread. They come with a tomato or garlic base as well, if you aren't much of a pesto person.
Once my sauce is applied, then I dice one clove of garlic and sprinkle that onto the pizza. I then add a thin layer of fresh spinach as well as a few thin slices of tomato.
Now I tend to make this pizza just before my fresh produce spoils, so I top it with whatever produce is in the house at the time...usually slices of green, red, yellow, or orange bell peppers. Mushrooms (rare), olives, and onions also work. Once I've added my toppings of choice, then I cover it with low-fat mozzarella cheese and sprinkle it with oregano and basil.
I prefer a crispy pizza crust, so I bake it (at 450 degrees) directly on the middle rack for about 10 mins, or until the cheese melts and browns on the edges.
Now, I rarely add meat to my pizza, but if I were going to cook it with meat, then I would probably opt for something pre-cooked. The pizza is in the oven for such a short time, that I would probably not rely on it to cook the meat. Pre-cooked chicken, pepperoni, ham, or Italian sausage are probably best.
Enjoy!

This weekend I took my car to the dealership for regular maintenance. They were supposed to change the oil and rotate the tires...now the steering wheel is pulling to the left, and I have to fight to keep the wheel straight. It is probably just a matter or re-aligning the wheels, but the dealership is super far from my house. Now instead of spending my Memorial Day weekend doing NOTHING, I have to contemplate whether or not I want to take the car back to be adjusted. ALSO, I am purchasing a custom countertop from IKEA. Twice I've had to call them and their countertop company to schedule appointments and follow-up. Mind you all of these calls were for items that they were supposed to contact me in regards to. It's like...it isn't the worst thing in the world, but I would prefer not to have to remember to do what I am supposed to do as well as to remind you to remember what you are supposed to do.
Whew...ok that was just a little rant. I'm still going to continue being happy about my life...but sometimes I just have to pause and shake my head at others.

You know I hear sooo much talk of a recession, and until now I didn't really feel like I was affected by the economy. I have a good job, my gas is pretty much paid for, and my mortgage is fixed. However, I am noticing that month after month I have to dip into my savings (just a little) to cover all of the bills. Now that isn't to say that I am running in the red...its just to say that of the $X's that I put into my savings account, I'm taking a portion back out to cover expenses.
Now I don't know if this is the economy or just me not being responsible w/my money. Either way I am going to have to start paying attention to my budget. I am remodeling my condo for sure I am going to be hitting my saving there. However, I probably didn't need the $7 Whole Foods breakfast that I got this morning. I also have been doing it really big these past few months just because...by this I mean I splurged in Rome, I spent about $250 on my mom for Mother's day, I bought a new printer, and I've been buying new clothes every chance that I get. Now these are all purchases that I really believe in, and I have held back in other ways (i.e. taking lunch at least 3 times a week). However, given my future financial goals, I'm going to have to cut back on even some of my most needed/deserved purchases.
Le sigh. Tough times folks. Never the less, I am going to write out my month expenses and make a point to stay within my monthly allotments. Wish me luck.

This is a question being discussed on a message board that I regularly visit. You know, it is honestly something that I have never really given much thought to in the past. I mean, I have always just assumed that I am full of self-esteem. Why wouldn't I be? I have a great job and family/friends around me that support me. I'm in good shape, and can certainly turn some heads. Plus I'm smart, and I have always done well in all of my endeavors.
However, during the discussion I began to wonder if I think my self-esteem is high b/c it has never been tested before. Like, would I really feel so good about myself if things weren't going my way. I doubt it, but at the same time...certainly things like supportive friends and family are what help to build confidence and give you self-esteem. They are inter-related.
Anywho, here are some of the things that I do to keep my self-esteem high even during low-points in life.
1. Count my blessings. Even when something goes wrong, there are still a ton of things going right at any given moment. Thank God I haven't taken any serious hits (like homelessness, drug abuse, or unexpected loss of a loved one), so its pretty easy to see the bright side of life. I try to focus on my health and safety, and that of my family and friends. I thank God for my home and my job. I reflect on all the life has in store for me and those around me. Suddenly whatever I am upset about doesn't seem so bad.
2. I focus on what I like about myself. I can be moody, but really I am pretty darn funny. Plus I'll give my last to help and support those that I love, so I think about those characteristics. The back of my legs have an interesting wrinkle thing going on, but the front of my thighs are waaay more defined than ever before. My stomach is looking right, and my arms have some nice definition going on. Instead of being concerned about my view from the back, I check out the front view and smile.
3. I do what I can with what I've got. I'm not saying that I'm the next Iman, but I am a bit of a looker. I feel better when I look my best, so I try to put forth the time and the effort to make that happen. I buy clothes that flatter my body. I accent my face w/accessories and/or make up that highlight my best features, and on the days when I'm just too tired for all of that, then I smile to myself and think "These ppl don't even really know what I'm working with."
4. I keep ppl around me who build me up. If you ask my parents, my best friend, or my man about me, then they are going to have nothing but good things to say. They support me and stand by me through the think and thin. Guess what...those are the primary people that I keep close to me. People that tear me down rather than lift me up or cast doubt into my mind are people who are marginalized in my life. That's not to say that you should be delusional or only role w/people who tell you what you want to hear. However, it is to say that you should stay tight with those who have your best interests at heart.
I hope those techniques help some of you reading. I know that self-esteem is easier said than done, but I these are just some of the things that work for me.

An Oatmeal Blueberry Mask for Oily Skin
"This easy mask, used once or twice monthly, will both deep clean and exfoliate your face. It's particularly beneficial for oily skin, as it drying and pulling effect. 1 cup oatmeal 1 cup blueberries 1 tablespoon honey 5-6 almonds, whole
Puree all ingredients in a blender until finely blended. Spread mixture over your face, and allow to set and dry (10-15 minutes). Rinse with warm water, and splash your skin with cool water or toner. This mask be may stored in your refrigerator for up to one week, covered tightly."
Papaya and Pumpkin Facial
" 2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed
15 oz. can pure pumpkin
1 egg, beaten
1. Prepare the mask. Cut the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds. Scoop out the papaya fruit and mash it well to eliminate lumps in the mask. Beat the egg until it is frothy. Combine that with the papaya. Add the pumpkin to the egg/papaya mixture and whip together. You can also mix the ingredients in the blender or a food processor for an extra smooth mask.
2. Prepare your face. Wash with your daily cleanser and remove all residual makeup on your skin. Rinse with warm water. It's very important to have clean skin to ensure you get maximum benefits from the facial.
3. Apply the Mask. Cover your entire face, being careful to avoid the immediate eye area. If you have sensitive skin, test the mixture on your hand before spreading it on your face. You'll feel some tingling as the enzymes in the pumpkin go to work immediately -- gently exfoliating your top layer of skin. It works like a scrub without being abrasive to your skin. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes.
4. Rinse Off Mask. After you've relaxed for ten minutes it's time to rinse. The mask is fairly thick -- head for the kitchen sink.
5. Apply Toner & Moisturizer."
Avocado Hand and Foot Mask
"Mix together 1/4 to 1/2 mashed fresh avocado, 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon rice bran, and 10 drops of oil of evening primrose. Gently massage this treatment onto your hands and feet, and leave in place for 20 minutes. Rinse. This natural treatment will revive your dry, wrinkled and rough hands, feet, elbows and knees. The avocado and egg nourish the skin with proteins and oils; the rice bran exfoliates dead skin cells; the oil of evening primrose contains precious gamma linolenic acids, essential for healthy hair, skin and nails. Consider purchasing a small jar of Oil of Evening Primrose capsules from your health food store. Open one, and voila...you have the ingredient for this recipe."
Strawberry Hand and Foot Exfoliant
"8-10 Strawberries 2 tablespoons Apricot Oil (you may substitute olive oil) Mix together all ingredients into a paste, massage into hands and feet, rinse, and pat dry. " What do you think? Any of these sound good, or am I a crazy person?
1 teaspoon of coarse salt, such as Kosher Salt, or Sea Salt
I've been getting up at 6 on Mon and Wed to read the Bible and pray. I own the NIV Student Bible (found here), which has several different reading tracks (2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 years). I decided to start at the beginning and just work my way through the three year track. Since I am planning to make this an on-going practice, then I figured I'd go for the full she-bang. Genesis has been pretty good so far. Of course you know the story, but it is nice to read the intros at the beginning of the chapters, as well as the items to note/consider, which are throughout the chapter. The biggest challenge has been not falling asleep during my quiet prayer. I'm so tired at 6 am, that its tough.
I get up at 5:30 on Tues, Thurs and 6:00 on Fri to do yoga. This has been really nice. Of course, I am tired at 5:30, but I'm usually alright once I am up and moving around. Mostly I feel good about myself for the rest of the day. I think the body is looking right, so I am on track to rock out in my bikini in July.
**Sidenote** That's all well and good, but I wish I could find more time in my day. It is not easy to get up early every morning, but its the best way to ensure that I get my Me things done. I really don't see my schedule opening up anytime in the future, either. Le sigh.
Next update...my Friday night pamper session. I'm off to research my options!

Let me hit you with a new segment that I am incorporating into the blog. Recipe of the Week!!!! Well essentially I have been selecting a recipe each week and preparing it for Sunday dinner. I'll post the recipe here and let you know what I thought of it.
Last night I made Rachel Ray's 'Lazy Sister Ria's Chicken'
Essentially I did the following:
Take 1 and 1/2 pounds of chicken breasts and brush them w/balsamic vinegar (I somehow missed this vinegar step, but I don't think it hurt the recipe). Then brown them on each side in a deep skillet containing about a tablespoon of EVOO over med-high heat. Remove the chicken from the pan once each side has browned.
I then added another tablespoon of EVOO to the pan, and laid out a layer of thin sliced and peeled white potatoes (about 2 potatoes) as well as thin sliced white onions (about 1/2 of a large onion). Over this mixture I shook on some McCormick's Steak seasoning, but salt and pepper should work too. I let this mixture brown on both sides being sure to keep the layer thin.
Once the potatoes and onions were brown, I added a layer of thinly sliced zucchini (1 small zucchini). Then I added the chicken breasts back into the pan (on top of the potatoes, onions, and zucchini), as well as about 1/2 cup of chicken broth. I sprinkled on another layer of the steak seasoning, and covered the entire mixture in crushed tomatoes (1 28oz can). Lastly, I topped the sauce w/a sprinkling of chopped basil and oregano.
I covered the entire mixture and let it cook until the chicken and potatoes were thoroughly cooked (about 10 - 15 mins). I finished the dish by topping it with shredded low-fat mozzarella cheese. (The recipe called for the dish to be placed under the broiler for about a minute to brown the cheese, but I don't have a cast iron skillet. I just re-covered the dish until the steam melted the cheese. Next time I will just add the cheese once the chicken has been dished onto the plate.) I served the final dish w/buttered (I can't believe its not butter) whole wheat bread.
It was yummy! It was supposed to be a 30 min meal, but that doesn't include prep time. If you add in the prep, then it will be about 45 mins the 1st time around. It will probably get faster in the future, though. I squeezed about 5 servings out of the dish. I will definitely make this again in the future.

Here's what I mean...on Sunday I went to Church (now I do consider that to be 'Me' time), then I went to Blockbuster, Walgreens, Radio Shack, and Ikea. Of course, these were all of my errands, but only one was really meant to nurture, calm, and strengthen my Self. I find that this is how most of my days go. I work, run errands, complete tasks, etc, but at the end of the day there isn't much that I can say that I did to truly take care of Me. I know that some of you must feel the same way when you think about it (even if you're too tough to really admit it).
So I'm on a mission to really work on and care for Me. Ok, so I've said that, but what does it mean.
1.Well I've been doing yoga in the AM before I head to work. This is kind of a catch 22 b/c it does get my day off to a good start, but it also cuts into my sleep, which I consider to be Very Important Me time. However, I like it, so I think I'll keep it in the routine. What else...?
2. Well I talked about taking more advantage of my weekends. I think this is really a balance. Sometime laying on the couch and flipping through the channels is just what I need to recuperate. However, when I have the energy, then I definitely want to spend time walking, reading, and meditating at the lake front.
3. The thing that I am most looking forward to is the bi-weekly pamper sessions that I am going to begin. As some of you know, I rarely pay to get my nails professionally manicured/pedicured and I never get facial treatments. While my bank account is thanking me for this, my nails and face are punishing me. So I am on a mission to find a few 'at home' routines that will get the job done. According to this month's Shape Magazine you can perform many of the same treatments at home for up to a year for the same price as one treatment at a spa. Sounds good to me. Here are some tricks that you can try at home too.
4. Now what is going to benefit me most (and prob should be at the top of my list). Is increasing the amount of time that I spend praying and reading my Bible. Currently I pray about 3 times a day. However its usually on the run (when I get into the car in the morning and evening), or when I'm not 100% focused (before I fall asleep at night). Where I want to get to is an additional period of quiet Bible reading, reflection and prayer. I'm not going to say that it will be every night b/c my mind is a bit too scattered for that. However, I do want to incorporate it with a focus similar to my exercise habits (meaning not purely at my convenience). I need to come up with a schedule and commit to it. Maybe I will commit to my 5:30 wake ups and do yoga 3 mornings of the week and read the Bible and pray the other 2 mornings of the week. I'll give it a shot this week and let you know how it goes.
Anyway, are you taking time to honor and care for yourself? If not, then you should be. Think about the areas that you have been neglecting yourself. What do you want to focus on and try to incorporate? Try committing to these things for 3 weeks. If they don't work, then try something different. However, make a diligent effort to focusing on you, and I think that you'll find that you like the changes you see/feel.
