Well...my day started off well until I found out that one of my co-workers/team members is being let go. This person is really kind and a team player, they just had some performance issues. (Actually this is the 2nd person in 2 days) I hate that it took this action for the gravity of the situation to hit me. If I had known what was at stake, then I definitely would have taken more one on one time to develop this person and highlight their successes. Damn! I really hate that this is happening.

So of course I have seen/heard of other ppl being let go in the past. However, its totally different when it is someone who reports directly to you. The disappointment is truly indescribable. I have DEFINITELY learned a lesson from this whole experience. We are each responsible for the success of those around us. We cannot make others excel, but we can do our best to equip them to achieve their highest potential. This is where I feel that I failed in this case. I just didn't realize how much of an impact I could have had on this person's future. I will not be making this mistake again.

Hooray for Monday Mornings!

Ok, ok...I'm not thrilled to be back at work either, but we can't live our whole lives dreading the start of the work week. I figure that I might as well suck it up, and find something to be glad about. I mean...Mondays aren't all bad. Mondays represent a fresh start...an opportunity to begin anew and do even better this time. Plus every new week draws you closer to your next vacation.

What am I going to try to accomplish this week? Well, I'm going to try again to work out five days (I already kicked it off w/an AM swim). I'll also try to be more diligent about my diet and my spending (I hit up the grocery store yesterday, so I'm well on my way towards that goal as well). I'm going to focus on getting all of my work deliverables complete...incl. a new project that my boss just asked me to lead! :-) Lastly, and most important, I'm going to try to focus on being a kind and positive person. I've really been working on looking at the bright-side of life. Someone once said there are so few things that you can control in life, but your mood is one of them...why not be happy? I like that, so no more cussing out bad drivers, or feeling threatened/attacked at work. I'm just going to take a deep breath, smile inwardly, and tackle the issue with confidence and calm.

What are your goals for the week? Are you trying to make this week better than your last?

Uber-fast Update!

I'm soooooo tired. I did manage 2 morning swims and a morning yoga session this week. I am planning to wrap up the week with one more yoga session on Saturday. I tried, yet again, to get in a solid 5 workouts (Mon - Fri), but it just didn't happen. A couple of late nights at work, and it was a wrap. Ah well. It was still a good week, so we'll just try again next week.

I have my 2nd facial appointment scheduled for tomorrow, for which I am once again excited. Hopefully, I won't nod off and sleep through the entire session. I think I might try to squeeze in time to do my nails on Sunday, so that I head back to work feeling totally pampered.

Lastly...speaking of work. Well, I definitely haven't been procrastinating. I have been so busy the last two weeks that I have found myself working pretty non-stop. The stress associated with that is no fun, but I'm glad to see myself being disciplined and productive. I'm going to try to keep this up :-)

My Wednesday Morning Chuckle!

**Singing** "When I grow up, I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies!"

Ok, maybe I don't need to do all of that, but I certainly have an image of myself as the 'well-put-together, strong but loving matriarch and timeless beauty'. I think that this image is probably driven by images of wonderful women that I have seen and admired all of my life. Here is just a little installment of some of the women that I admire and aspire to emulate...

First and Foremost!

Gotta love Iman!

The Ageless Dianne Carrol!

And of course, Ms Halle Berry!

2004 - 2008 Summer Olympic Games

This weekend I have spent quite a bit of time watching the Olympic games. I mean I LOVE the Olympics. They only come once every four years, and they are always full of pomp and circumstance. It just a great reason to get excited.
Well this year's opening ceremonies were truly amazing. Beijing raised the bar waaaaay up. I was trying to remember opening ceremonies from the 2004 Athens games, and I really couldn't recall the event. However, this all got me to reflecting on where I was and what I was doing 4 years ago. It seems that I have come so far in such a short amount of time. Here is what's happened.
In August 2004 I had graduated from college the previous spring, moved back to my home town, and I had just begun my full-time gig. Since then I have:
- Visited 3 different countries
- Gained clarity on my future
- Become a better auditor
- Lost a heap of weight
- Honed my personal style
- Adopted a pet
- Grown closer to God
- Learned some hard lessons
- Met and loved some wonderful people
- Gained a deeper respect for my parents
- Become a healthier person
- Learned a lot about myself
- Lived in a different city
- Purchased my 1st home
- Identified further areas for improvement
- Developed a 5 and 10 year plan
Overall, it has been a great four years, and I can't wait for the next four. What have you done in the last four years?

You see these?

Yeah, I own them. $150 brand new at Play It Again Sports. I'm very pleased.
One day...one day...

One day I will have complete ownership of my schedule. I will be able to go to the gym in the morning, come home and get dressed leisurely, drink a cup of tea, and watch the Today show...all before heading out to the office.

This is how I began my morning today, and it's usually how I am able to begin my mornings on days that I am traveling out of town. Every single time it is simply lovely, and I long to make this my regular schedule. Le sigh. Until then, I'll continue the life of a 20 something, which includes early morning rises, 45 min workouts, a 15 minute mad dash to shower and dress, topped off with a hair raising hour long commute. Fun times!

Ok, so I am seriously one scatter brained young lady. However, I'm ok w/that...I think it makes me quirky-cute.

Well continuing in my scatter brained tradition...I am planning to buy a used/inexpensive set of golf clubs. I have two golf outings coming up this fall, and they both require you to bring your own clubs. The cost to rent clubs on a few separate occasions is quickly adding up to the cost to just purchase an inexpensive set. Plus, whether I like it or not, golf is THEE number one corporate bonding activity...ok right after drinking. So this evening I'm going to stop by Play It Again sports where they sell new and used sporting equipment for the cheap.

But wait...I don't know how to play golf. I took about 8 weeks worth of classes back in college, but I haven't been out on the course since then. Being the savy person that I am, I searched around on the internet and found semi-private golf lessons in my city. They offer a package of 5 sessions for $190 for groups of 4 ppl. I'm going to give a call this weekend to see if I need to find 3 other ppl interested, or if they can just add me to a group of 3 other individuals. Either way...hopefully I'll be a golf pro (or at least able to hit the ball) in no time!

Sooooo I totally overslept this morning. I really don't know what happened. My alarm was set for 5:30 am, yet I woke up to the sunlight streaming in my window (a fantastic way to awaken, I might add) at 6:30 am. Eh, I am just going to chalk it up to the fact that God knew I needed that extra hour of sleep and try again tomorrow.

My hope is to do an hour of yoga tonight, if I can get out of the office at a reasonable hour. Either way, I will plan to swim tomorrow morning, do yoga on Friday, and swim again on Sat. My mother recently gave me a travel clock, so I'm going to begin using that as my alarm rather than my cell phone.

As a side note, I need to once again refine my diet and exercise plan. My current plan has me averaging two days of cardio (swimming) and two days of strength training (yoga) per week. However, I still feel as though I am gaining weight. This is all speculation b/c I have refused to step back on the scale, however my dresses and slacks are feeling a bit snug. Therefore, I am going to up the average to 3 days of cardio per week and then try to maintain my two days of strength training per week. This will be challenging, esp. since I am just one month out of busy season (lol...as if I wasn't already working busy season hours). However, I loved the way that I felt about myself when I was right around 160 lbs, so I'm going to fight to stay there.

Now I will admit...the fight would be quite a bit easier if I would put down the damn fork...or cookies...or snickers mini-bites, etc. There are so many snacks at my job that it has been hard to resist. Plus I have just gotten out of the habit of selecting truly low-fat/low-cal options (like a salad for lunch or yogurt for breakfast). So my plan (which I will commit to blogging about regularly in order to keep me honest) is to whip myself back into shape. I have been successful at bringing breakfast/lunch to work 3 days out of the week. I just need to make good choices on those off days, cut out all of the unnecessary extras, and quit splurging so much on the weekends.

Try to keep me honest folks. I'm really good for sneaking a treat and pretending like it never happened ;-)

'Uber-fast Updates' AND 'Tuesday's Tips' Combined!!

Just wanted to give an update on where I am on the career path. I have a meeting set up with my manager and counselor to discuss my goals and ways to develop and grow over the next year. I can also get a feel for what he is expecting from me as my plan is to EXCEED EXPECTATIONS! Hopefully I'll get to take on some add'l responsibility on my team, and I will be able to excel within my role.

So here is what's fun...I was looking online for tips on career advancement. I happened upon this article, on AllBusiness.com. It lists 10 tips on moving up the corporate ladder, and can you guess what is the very 1st tip? TALK TO YOUR BOSS!!! I'm already ahead of the curve...or maybe right on target. Anyway, yay for me! Check out the rest of the article.

  1. Talk to your boss. Sit down and have a very direct and pointed conversation with your boss about your future in the company. Stress that you want your job performance to meet the company’s goals. Share your own career goals with him or her. Your boss will respect this display of confidence and maturity.
  2. Ask for more. Volunteering to help out other departments or teams — or simply asking for more responsibilities — increases your value within the organization. Asking for additional work shows an interest and desire to help your department and company to succeed. It also puts a spotlight on your value to the business.
  3. Volunteer for boards. If you have your career set on something beyond what you are doing in your present position, seek out opportunities to volunteer or serve on advisory boards, where you can build a reputation as someone who is passionate and dedicated to your particular industry.
  4. Sharpen your people skills. Strong interpersonal skills play a crucial role in gaining the respect of your boss and coworkers; they will also attract the notice of outside influencers who might open new doors of opportunity for you. Be friendly, outgoing, and personable. Listen carefully to people, and practice being a clear and effective communicator.
  5. Be innovative. Never be afraid to think outside of the box and put your business acumen to work. Stay on the lookout for creative solutions to problems that will make you — and your boss — look good.
  6. Find a mentor. Develop mentoring relationships, either inside or outside the company. Recent studies have shown that four out of five promotions are influenced by a mentor higher up in the company. Mentors are also great sources of information and career guidance.
  7. Sell yourself. Learn the fine art of self-promotion. If you have had major accomplishments or created successful programs, make sure people know about it — especially those in influential positions who could help you advance professionally. Let it be known that you are seeking a promotion or the next step up in your career.
  8. Keep learning. A proven way to advance in your career is to be continually acquiring new knowledge. Stay on top of trends or developments in your field and make sure that your current résumé reflects those needed skills.
  9. Network. Strengthen your personal network and join professional organizations, attend industry conferences, or even volunteer. The more people who are aware of your strengths and abilities, the better your chances of hearing about any new opportunities that might arise.
  10. Build your reputation. In business, your reputation is the most valuable thing you own. Be known for being dependable, professional, and cooperative. Act and look the part by dressing professionally. Make a name for yourself by attending conferences, delivering speeches, or writing articles.

Yesterday was good, but I'm interested in making today better and tomorrow better still. Here's a nice quote that I'm going to try to keep in mind.

"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind...let it be something good."

Uber-fast Update!

(How do you like the new title? I'm trying to find another 'U' word to match update...ya know...like 'Tip Tuesday', I have 'Uber-fast Updates' :-). I am accepting other suggestions, though.)

After two 5:30 am swims in a row, I am VERY tired, but also very excited. I LOVE when I am in a nice workout groove. It can be so hard to maintain, but I feel great about myself. I did yoga on Monday morning, swam Wednesday and today, and I am planning for yoga again tomorrow morning. My plan is to get in one final yoga workout for the week on Saturday, but if the weather is nice, then I might walk along the lake instead.

This week I was trying to workout every morning so that I wouldn't have to workout at all on the weekend. However, Monday was a long night, so I slept late (6 am ) on Tuesday. That just seems to be the way that it goes...something always pops up. I'll try again next week.

Lastly, I know you all are wondering what happened to my bike. Ok maybe this question hasn't been plaguing you relentlessly for the last several months, but here is the status. I got the seat lowered so that I can ride it comfortably...BUT the tires are somehow flat. I don't know how the hell it happened, but I sat on the thing and the tires were completely flat to the ground. I have a pump, and both my dad and I tried to re-fill the tires...BUT we don't know how to use the pump. It's weird...a little button on the top of the pump pops up and lets the air escape. So where am I now? I have to take the tire off and take both the tire and the pump into a bike store for a demo. So sad. I'm going to try to put that on this weekend's priority list.

(That update wasn't uber-fast at all.)

**singing** "Motivation! Haters get on ya job...haters get on ya job!"

Who needs a little motivation get off the couch and back into the gym? I've been pretty diligent about working out, but this past weekend I took off 3 days in a row. It felt great, but of course it was temporary. Now it's time to get back on the grind.

This morning as I began looking for tips and ways to motivate oneself, I came across several articles (linked below). However, my favorite mentioned two types of motivation...Positive Motivation and The Fear Factor. Need an example?

The Fear Factor!

Positive Motivation!

I think that you get the point. Either can be very effective at propelling you to the next level in your diet/workout routine. I like to think that I'm primarily driven by positive motivation, but I have to admit...from time to time the fear of 'what could be' is just the kick in the pants that I need. Regardless of what motivates you...use that motivation to set and achieve your goals. Eating right and working out are in your best interest. Not only will you look better, but you will feel better and be healthier.

Still not encouraged? Well here are a couple of articles to get you back in gear!

Do you day dream?

I always hear folks (ministers, motivational speakers, etc) talk about dreaming big...bigger than your wildest dreams. For a long time it was very difficult for me to really understand this concept. I mean, I'm a pretty practical person, so most of my dreams are things that I really see myself accomplishing based upon where my life is today.

This isn't a bad thing as they say you should have very tangible goals. However, if you believe in God to take you beyond where you can get yourself, then you have to hope for the intangible too. So I've always kinda said "Yeah yeah that makes since.", but I never was able to really wrap my mind around believing in or hoping for something that seemed completely impossible.

Well this morning on my way to work I had a wonderfully elaborate day dream (I mean I was so into it by the time that I re-focused on traffic, I was several exits ahead. Seriously, but for the grace of God, I would not make it.) about making partner after only two years as a senior manager. I imagined myself getting the news, accepting, celebrating by dancing and drinking the night away, sharing the news w/my family, and then being announced to the office as a new partner. I even imagined myself attending new partner training and my 1st partner meeting. It was exciting, made me smile, and motivated me for the rest of the day. Now you may or may not realize this, but I have a VERY active imagination. I day dream about all kinds of things...including those that I am too embarrassed to share here.

Well it hit me that maybe this is dreaming big. Maybe imagining myself and my future far beyond where I am and hope to go is all that I need to do. Clearly you are going to focus your energies on those tangible dreams, but I honestly think that dreaming big helps you to reach just beyond your tangible goals. You exceed your expectations, and end up in a better place than where you expected.

All of this is to say, spend some time day dreaming. Enjoy imagining your life different, transformed, or on another level. Don't start slipping on your pimping and put day dreaming ahead of hard work and actions. However, don't be shy about letting your childlike imagination run wild and seeing yourself in a whole new place. Who knows...one day you just might end up there.

CNN's Black in America

CNN Presents: Black in America - Black Women and Family 9-11pm, 12-2am, 3-5am

July 24
CNN Presents: Black in America - Black Men - 9-11pm, 12-2am, 3-5am
Ok...sorry for my little outburst yesterday. It was driven by stress. STRESS, STRESS, STRESSSSSSSS! However, I recently stumbled across this lovely article discussing work place stress and ways to cope. A couple of the coping mechanisms are listed below. Enjoy!

Tips for coping with job-related stress include:

  • Setting realistic goals and expectations at work. It is important to be aware of the available time in the day to accomplish all necessary tasks. Whenever possible, it is a good idea to delegate or schedule tasks in a manner that allows extra time for their completion.

  • Planning ahead. Preparing to the best of one’s ability for stressful events, such as work presentations or job interviews. Not only will this go a long way in promoting peace of mind, but it can also help one excel in such situations.

  • Being assertive. Keeping lines of communications open with supervisors and other colleagues, taking time to consider one’s goals and schedule before agreeing to take on additional work, and saying “no” to nonessential tasks are examples of appropriate assertiveness. It should be noted that this is not the same as being uncompromising or abrasive in the workplace.

Another example is asking for a new challenge if work becomes monotonous. Not only will doing so help improve personal job satisfaction, but supervisors may be impressed by the initiative.

  • Taking breaks when needed. It is impossible to work every single minute of the work day, which typically lasts anywhere from 8 to 12 hours. Going out to lunch, stretching or taking a short walk when necessary can not only help break up the day, but may also provide a much-needed energy boost. When necessary, take a day off from work to regroup and rest.

  • Managing workplace tension. This can be accomplished by working to resolve conflicts with coworkers and/or supervisors in a positive way, such as by talking in an objective, non-accusative manner.

  • Balancing one’s personal and work time. Achieving this balance is very important because being constantly focused on work can leave individuals with little time and energy to spend with significant others, family or friends. It can end up lowering workplace productivity due to burnout from overwork. Over time, it can also have a negative impact on personal relationships and lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  • Incorporating a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet, getting proper sleep, and engaging in exercise as recommended by a physician. Also, avoid coping with job-related stress in unhealthy ways, such as by overeating, consuming too much caffeine and/or alcohol, smoking cigarettes or abusing drugs.

  • Practicing relaxation techniques, such as biofeedback, massage therapy, meditation or yoga. These can help reduce stress and alleviate anxiety, insomnia and depression and physical manifestations of stress, including reduction of blood pressure.

  • Maintaining a positive attitude. This can nurture self-confidence, which can empower an individual to deal with hardships such as being laid off. Other positive coping mechanisms include avoiding self-criticism, being proud of one’s accomplishments no matter how big or small and finding sources of humor (e.g., books, movies).

Let's go full-steam ahead people!!!!!!

This past Sunday my pastor got to speaking about moving forward with a spirit of expectation. Check John 5:1-10 if you're looking for the verse. The sermon covered a couple of different topics, but a couple stood out to me.

The main lesson that I learned was to look forward to your future with excitement and the expectation of great things to occur. There are all kinds of road blocks that have stood (and perhaps still stand) in our way. However, we cannot let these things become a deterrent. There are great blessings in store for each and everyone of us in spite of whatever difficulties we face. Let's live our lives looking past our roadblocks to our bright and near future. Let's focus on the opportunities that we have to overcome our hurdles and the reward that is awaiting us, rather than the hurdles themselves. When you focus to closely on your present or past difficulties then you lose sight of God, who holds your solution. Instead focus on your faith, your blessings, and the Lord, and your outlook will instantly brighten.

Fav quote of the sermon: "Sometimes our biggest enemy is our inner-me."

So put a big smile on your face everyone! Great things await us all. No more holding back, making excuses, or waiting in someone else to take us to the next level. Release your fears and struggles of the past....whatever is meant for you, IT IS FOR YOU!!! Nevermind what is standing in your way. If it is meant to be, then there is nothing that can stop it :-D

**singing** I'm so spa-licious!

Ok, I admit that I JUST made that up, but its no less true. I went in for my facial this morning, and it was heavenly. My esthetician was a bit sadistic (apparently her favorite services are waxing and extraction), but she was still awesome. She is pretty new in the business (under a year), but she was very professional and really seemed to know a lot. Right now I feel refreshed and relaxed. I got a few samples to try out this week, so we'll see how my skin reacts. She got me to make an appt for 4 weeks from now, but in my defense I had already decided that I wanted to come back b4 she made her pitch ;-)

ANNND the overall facility was very nice. Our People came through. Its definitely a beauty salon that offers spa services (i.e. one small back room operates as the 'spa'). However, its a natural hair salon, so its nice to be back in the 'salon environment' w/women who share my same hair interests. Although its not a super spacious, tricked out spa, I felt very comfortable there. If I decide to try more extensive services (like some sort of wrap or milk bath), then I'll have to go to a back up location. However, for my facial and massage needs...I think this might be a match!

Flintstones anyone?

At this point, I think that most of us are old enough that we are taking some sort of daily multi-vitamin or supplement. It may be one quick chewable or a whole pack of horse pills. Either way, here is a brief breakdown of the essential vitamins and supplements to aid you in your fitness goals.

For Women

For Men
I refuse to complain.

I think that this will be my new mantra.

I'm healthy.
I have a great family.
I have great friends.
I have a good job.
I have had wonderful experiences.
I am SURE that many more great things are to come.

Life isn't perfect, but I refuse to focus on anything other than the blessings that are flowing down all over me.

So decorating...my home needs it.

As I was cleaning up last Saturday, I began looking around at my furniture. Four years ago I thought that my look was great. Most of my furniture was handed down from my parent's old home, but I was really pleased with the items that I received. I still am very grateful for them, but looking around it is very clear to me that an upgrade is needed. I mean...to be honest...my bedroom set is the same one that I had in the 6th grade, and my couch and coffee table are at least 8 - 10 yrs old.

It's time to start investing in a face lift. I've already begun heading down this road by making updates to my kitchen and bathroom. However, these were updates that I was making solely with the goal of increasing my home's value to eventually sell it. This is still a long-term goal of mine, but why not make it an awesome place to live in the meantime?

So hear is what I need to do...

Within the next year I would like to replace my stove and refrigerator with stainless steel appliances. I actually can go ahead and do this just as soon as I find a decent sale. I will probably make this a Labor Day or Christmas gift to myself.

I also would like to replace my couch and coffee table, my desk, and my bedroom set. Honestly I want to get rid of almost all of my furniture, but I will have to pace myself.

I want to paint my bedroom, living room, and maybe kitchen. I may paint the entire rooms, but most likely I will just paint one or two accent walls. I just want something to spice up the space.

Really long-term...I would like to have hardwood floors installed. Carpet and a pets are a huge No-No.

After that, there are just a few other non-essential updates that I would like to make...like a new TV in the living room ;-)

I'm going to try to post updates here as I find items that I like and purchase. Until then here are just a few pics to give you an idea of the feel that I will be going for.

Soooo
...I booked my appointment at the spa, and I am all set to get a calming/sensitive skin facial this Saturday. I made the appt with a local black owned salon in an effort to try to give our ppl business... annnnd b/c they were about $30 cheaper than my 2nd choice. Hopefully everyone will act right, and it can be a relaxing and therapeutic experience. If not...then it's game over. My 2nd choice is owned by a Latina, so I won't feel too guilty bringing her business instead.

Ok...so I'm back from a lovely weekend in the Bahamas. I hung out with old friends, made new friends, and most important I got to celebrate the union of two people who love one another immensly.

Sooo...I know that you all are wondering what are the results of the 'Get it right, Git it tight' work out plan. Well feast your eyes...

Not bad, huh?

However, I DEFINITELY took full advantage of the all-inclusive package, so tomorrow we are starting the 'Keep it right, Keep it tight' workout plan. I hit up the grocery store this evening, so now I can start packing breakfast and lunch again. This should help to keep my eating and snacking under control.

I need one full night of sleep, so I won't be doing a 5:30 workout tomorrow morning. However, I do plan to start back up on Wednesday. The plan is to do morning yoga for the rest of the week and swim this weekend. Whew...well I can confidently say that I have made this change a way of life.
I don't usually do politics on this blog but...

ABSOLUTE.BULLSHIT!!!

I really don't know which I hate more...the fact that this drawing was created and published or the fact that some idiots in this nation will be swayed by it. I mean really, I thought that we had squashed this non-sense. Here is a quick rundown of why the New Yorker is getting a serious cuss out in my head right now...

1. After the Trinity United Church of CHRIST scandal how can we possibly still be accusing Obama of being Muslim?

2. Being Muslim does not equate to being a terrorist.

3. Refusing to bend over and kiss America's ass does not equate to being un-patriotic, hating the nation, or disrespecting the flag.

4. Michelle Obama doesn't even have natural hair. Clearly this is how they will always see us. AND AND AND natural hair isn't a freakin' insult.

5. They totally stepped on my favorite shot of 'Team Barack and Michelle Obama'...the fist pound.

6. Most importantly...people in this nation are tooo STUPID and PREJUDICED to realize that electing a Black president is one of the best things that this nation can do for its global image. Barack Obama is the best (most non-threatening...unless of course you're looking for a Clarence Thomas) Black man for the job. It's time to take our heads out of our asses and realize that "Hey, the rest of the world (even our allies) don't think that we're big shit. Most of them despise our ignorance and arrogance. If we don't fall back, take a serious look at who we are and what we stand for, and stop trying to pimp the rest of the world for our own advancement, then we're going to end up broken and ruined like so many nations before us." Obama may not be the answer to all of our problems, but as long as we stay locked in this short-sighted, race-based, change adverse, the rest of the world owes us mindset, then our sustainability as a nation is limited.

That.Is.All!

On my to do list... a visit to Fleet Feet Sports!

I've been hearing a lot about this place, but have yet to check it out. According to their website (and the word on the street), they custom size your foot and assess your gait in order to provide the best shoe fit possible. Now this may not be important for everyone, but it sure is to me.

I usually don't tell people this but...I have flat feet. I mean really flat feet. Like my ankles brush against one another and the alignment btwn my feet and knees is just wrong. What's the result? Lots of knee problems. Now I don't do to much exercising in shoes anymore (hooray for swimming and yoga!), but when I DO get out on the treadmill or track I'd like to have the right amount of support. Well this store is geared towards giving you just that. Here is the process that makes it all happen:

Step One: Welcome and Explanation of our Fitting Process
Every process has a beginning point, fitting our customers begins with “hello” and an explanation of the steps we take to fit you for the best shoe for your needs.

Step Two: Getting to Know You
We take time to ask questions about your current activity, such as how often you run, how far and if you have a goal in mind. We also discuss any existing or past injuries and talk about the footwear you currently use.

Step Three: Measurement
Several measurements of each foot help us determine proper sizing. We record both unweighted (seated) and weighted (standing) measurements.

We aren't doctors and don't pretend to be, but we will take a look at your feet for signs that will help us fit you properly and determine any special needs.

Step Four: Gait Analysis
We'll bring out a neutral “test” shoe and observe as you run or walk a short distance. This helps us understand how you move and the biomechanics of your gait.

Step Five: Fitting and Recommendations
Based on our findings we will bring out the shoes that may work best for you. We'll carefully inspect the fit and watch as you run or walk in each shoe. We'll discuss the options, provide you with our recommendations and answer any questions.

Step Six: The Decision
This one is all you since you are the only person who knows how the shoes actually feel.

Step Seven: Ready to Go
Now that you've made a decision, we'll talk about how to properly break in your new shoes, help with any other product needs you may have and make sure you're ready to get the best results!

I have heard that the prices are pretty comparable with your average Foot Locker/Champs' store, so I think that I'm going to check them out. They have locations all over the country, so check their website for a store near you!

I'm baaaaaaaack! Here are a few more quick updates.

On the professional development front, I have been talked into signing up for Toast Masters. If you aren't familiar with the organization, then the general gist is that they are a group of people geared towards increasing their public speaking capabilities. You sign up with a group of people and are required to make 12 speeches over a one or two year time period. You present in front of others in the group and they provide feedback on your speech. After you have completed your 12 speeches, then you are Toast Master certified, and hopefully a better speaker. Now I didn't really want to sign up b/c I tend to think that I am already a very good public speaker. However, practice never hurt anyone, and its been a while since I spoke in front of a group of complete strangers. I don't want to lose my touch ;-) I think that one of my speeches will be about blogging.

On a different note...my 1st event as co-chair of the African American Affinity Group has been canceled :-( Our sponsor gave us the thumbs down, which sucks. I guess it is back to the drawing board. Maybe we can do a 'Lunch and Learn' instead. We could ask a black partner to come and share his/her experiences on progressing through the firm. Hmmm...we shall see.

As for taking time for Me...I didn't get to go to the spa this weekend. My schedule just filled up, and I wanted to spend time with friends b4 the weekend was over. However, I am determined to make an appointment for a facial this weekend. As soon as the spas open, I am calling and booking.

Pics and more updates to come later.

Suuuuuuper quick updates...

So today I'm rocking a black and white dress w/sexy red patent leather pumps. The hair is braided back and swooped to the side, and I am looking like a model. Why you ask? Because I was born this way? Well that's only partially correct. The bigger reason is that I'm going to be in a photo shoot today! Many of you know that I participated in a mentorship program this year, and the firm is going to be taking photos of the mentors to document the program. I don't know if I'll end up on some sort of company-wide brochure or anything, but I am certainly prepared.

Yesterday I got to visit a Hindu temple. My co-worker invited me, and it was very cool. She took me around to all of the statutes of the deities and explained their purpose. Then she took a moment for quiet reflection/prayer at each one, while I browsed. It was a beautiful space, and I learned a lot. I definitely encourage you to learn about other religions. It's not a matter of weakening in your own faith, but rather gaining a respect for someone else's. I may not be a convert, but I am always glad to see someone else enjoy a relationship with a higher power, which gives them a sense of right/wrong/hope/love/justice/faith.

Lastly, I am off to the Bahamas tomorrow. I have done my very best at hanging w/the workout plan. I got a work out in everyday w/the exception of Friday and Sunday. The diet wasn't great, but I think that the body is looking JUST RIGHT. Pics to come! Overall, I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a relaxing and memorable weekend. I'll blog more when I return.

Ciao!

Gardasil concerns.

Now I know that there are all kinds of adverse reactions to new drugs, but hearing these occurrences after this drug was pushed upon the public is certainly concerning. Hopefully no other major side-effects are found.
Random comment...I must get the full DVD sets of my four favorite sitcoms of all time:

The Cosby Show
A Different World
The Golden Girls
Designing Women

Aaah, I can watch those re-runs again and again and again.

Life begins today!

These words came to mind while I was cleaning my house today. I was moving a perpetual calendar that my mother gave me...you know the kind...they are made up of blocks with months and numbers, but not years. You can forever arrange it into the correct month and day combination. Sorry, I have digressed. As I was moving the calendar, I looked at the date...my birthday. I pretty much never advance this thing except for on my birthday (and maybe one or two other special days out of the year). Today was really no different at all. I just felt like "What's the point?"

Now on a side note...as I was cleaning I was also going through a mental goals check. A while ago, I blogged about wanting to take myself and my life to a whole other level over the next 18 months. I think that now my motivation is a bit different, but the goal and timeline is still very valid. I'm ready to begin my adult life. Don't get me wrong...I'm not a wreck or anything like that, but I can be (and I want to be) better.

So needless to say...I figured Today is the Day! Why continue to wait? I think that for a long time I was waiting for some milestone to happen in my life to begin adopting certain grown up characteristics...turning 30, getting married, making manager. These are definitely all milestones that I have said to myself "Well I'll do XYZ when I (fill in the blank)." That's no way to live. I think that sometimes you have to grow and advance as a person to even make it to those milestones (except for turning 30...in that case you just have to...you know...stay alive).

Now its a bit difficult for me to articulate what exactly I want to accomplish. There are some clear ways that I can improve (like paying bills on time w/o fail and maintaining a cleaner home). However, its really just a shift in mindset. It's getting away from procrastinating and really focusing on becoming the Me that I envision myself being. It may be a matter of continuing to develop my cooking skills. It may be a matter of remodeling my home (a topic that I will post on next). It may be a matter of honing my personal style or focusing on growing my finances. Sorry if this all sounds a bit scatter brained :-) I just envision my life differently, and I am ready to begin living the life that I envisioned TODAY!

So suffice it to say that I set my blocks to July 5th to signal a new start. Of course, its scary b/c I don't want to flake out on myself, so I'll be blogging about the challenges that I take on and concur. Fun times.
Workout tips and recommendations.

Hey all. I've been browsing the internet, and I came across some great articles for exercising and getting into shape. Check them out!

Do you have a purpose in life?

This is one of those deep philosophical questions that some people spend their entire lives trying to find the answer to. At the same time, there are other people who know their purpose very early on and spend the rest of their lives working towards it.

I can't say that I feel that I have a particular calling or distinct purpose...at least not one that I have discovered. Things like giving back to my community and being a good Christian are high on my priority list, so I guess that the activities involved with those two goals are how I feel that I am making my mark on this earth. However, what I ultimately believe is that everything happens for a reason, and everything we do has a purpose. I like to think that all of the things (good and bad) that happen to me in life are for a reason and fit into some greater plan of good.

At the end of the day I don't really need to be famous or immortalized or talked about for decades to come. I will feel pleased if I am successful at maintaining and building upon my strong relationship with God, honoring myself (mentally, physically, and spiritually), being a good person (daughter, friend, employee, maybe wife/mother), giving something back to both those who've helped me along the way and those who do not know how to help themselves, and truly appreciating and enjoying the journey. If I am lucky enough to say that I accomplished those things, then I can say that I fulfilled my purpose in life. Luckily that list doesn't actually look too long or difficult ;-)

**singing** "Summer, Summer, Summertime!"

Aaaah, Will Smith you know just how to get the season started. While driving to work in the mornings I usually listen to the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Well all of this week they are in beautiful St. Thomas (U.S.V.I)! Let me tell you...hearing them interview the various island representatives got me so HYPED for the Bahamas!!! The mention of rum cake and snorkeling had me smiling and yearning for the tropics.

Plus plus plus...I went bikini shopping last night. I must say that the situation was not bad a'tall. After 2 solid weeks of working out...the body is going to be bananas. They aren't even ready for what I'm about to be doing!

So let's recap...we're starting of w/uber fine ME! + 2 new hott bikinis + all the alcohol that I can consume (prepaid & you know that I don't have any hangups about what time of the day I can drink) + beautiful setting + great friends = 1 hell of an awesome getaway!

Monday, June 30, 2008

Soooo...the plan is to work out everyday for the next week and a half. Once I get to the Bahamas...it's pretty much a wrap. The only exercise that I am trying to get is the walk back and forth to the bar ;-).

Here is the schedule:

Mon - Yoga (check)
Tues - Swim
Wed - Swim
Thurs - Yoga
Fri - Swim
Sat - Yoga
Sun - Yoga
Mon - Swim
Tues- Yoga
Wed - Swim

Whew..this is not going to be fun. Now I'm heading out to purchase a new bikini today, so I am expecting that image in my head to be sufficient motivation. Nobody likes a soft belly.

Just wanted to make it known that the Turkey Lasagna was...AWESOME!!!!

It took a while to prepare from prep to completion (about an hour and a half), but it was ultimately a very good dish. The parents loved and appreciated it, which is what was most important. My only tip (if you're trying to duplicate on your own) is to soak the noodles in boiling water. The recipe calls for 'hottest tap water', however they could have been a bit more tender for my tastes, so in the future I will be soaking them in water that has come to a boil instead.

:-)

You like me! You really really like me!!!!

At least that is what I was thinking when I got a call from my partner today! I have been approved for a HIGH IMPACT AWARD!!!! That's a 5% bonus in my paycheck today, baby!!! Whooo hoooo...way to make my day!

I have to admit that this was right on time. Between just us...I was feeling a bit down this week. I have been working hard on a weekly report, and I tell ya...I will work on it for hours, send it to the manager, and then he has a whole host of revisions for me within the hour. I was just feeling that I wasn't giving him what he was looking for, and that he wasn't satisfied w/my work. I may still need to step up my game on the report, but at least I know that I am pulling my weight.

On other career improvements...I am on a different client this week where I am performing mostly a reviewer/advisor role. I have been asserting myself and securely stating my opinions, and I really think that it is paying off. The client team that I am working with seem to really respect me and value my opinions. I've grown more confident in my experience and judgement, and I am allowing it to reflect in my demeanor and behavior.

Really quick goals update...

I went to lunch w/two co-workers today to discuss what we call our 'African American Affinity Group' (AAAG). The current leader for the AAAG is preparing to go on maternity leave, so a fellow co-worker and I are going to lead the group in her absence. Yay! We're pretty excited. We identified some high level goals to focus on, which are Professional Development, Recruiting & On-boarding, and Social. We also identified some general ideas which should help us meet these goals. My new co-lead and I are going to narrow the goals down into a few specific activities for the year and then recruit some individuals to help execute each. Our 1st task is to coordinate an event for the staff and interns.

Wish us luck!
Ok - so to celebrate my parent's wedding anniversary I have decided to cook them dinner. Sorry folks...I just don't have anymore money to buy gifts or take folks out to dinner. We're taking it back to elementary school w/hand-crafted gifts.

Now I know some of you might be thinking...really...you?...cooking? However, I'm planning to keep it as simple as possible w/some sort of 1 dish meal that can get the job done. Here are my options:

Turkey Lasagna -
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup chopped yellow onion (1 onion) 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 pounds sweet Italian turkey sausage, casings removed 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes in tomato puree 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, divided 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 pound lasagna noodles 15 ounces ricotta cheese 3 to 4 ounces creamy goat cheese, crumbled 1 cup grated Parmesan, plus 1/4 cup for sprinkling 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten 1 pound fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Heat the olive oil in a large (10 to 12-inch)
skillet. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes over medium-low heat, until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the sausage and cook over medium-low heat, breaking it up with a fork, for 8 to 10 minutes, or until no longer pink. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, 2 tablespoons of the parsley, the basil, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Simmer, uncovered, over medium-low heat, for 15 to 20 minutes, until thickened.

Meanwhile, fill a large bowl with the hottest tap water. Add the noodles and allow them to sit in the water for 20 minutes. Drain.

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta, goat cheese, 1 cup of Parmesan, the egg, the remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Set aside.

Ladle 1/3 of the sauce into a 9 by 12 by 2-inch rectangular baking dish, spreading the sauce over the bottom of the dish. Then add the layers as follows: half the pasta, half the mozzarella, half the ricotta, and one third of the sauce. Add the rest of the pasta, mozzarella, ricotta, and finally, sauce. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of Parmesan. Bake for 30 minutes, until the sauce is bubbling.

Shrimp Gumbo Casserole -
Gumbo: 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 bay leaves 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon lemon-pepper seasoning 1 1/2 teaspoons House Seasoning, recipe follows 1 cup chicken or fish stock 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes 10-ounce package frozen cut okra 2 cups shrimp, cleaned, peeled, and deveined

Topping: 1 egg, beaten 1/3 cup milk 12-ounce package corn muffin mix

In an iron skillet, saute onion and celery in oil. Add bay leaves, thyme, lemon-pepper seasoning and House Seasoning. Pour in stock and add tomatoes and okra. Cover pot and gently simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in shrimp.

To prepare the topping, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Mix together egg and milk, add to muffin mix, and combine until just well-blended. Drop by tablespoonfuls on top of hot shrimp mixture, leaving the center uncovered. Bake 15 to 20 minutes.

Cook's Note: This Southern dish usually is prepared and served in an iron skillet, but may be cooked in a frying pan with an ovenproof handle.

House Seasoning: 1 cup salt 1/4 cup black pepper 1/4 cup garlic powder
Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

What do you think of the two choices? I am thinking I'll do garlic bread or corn bread as an accompaniment. I will prob also do some sort of wine/alcoholic beverage and a store bought dessert.

30 yrs of marriage...this is the accomplishment that my parents achieved today. It is so amazing that I really don't know just what to say about it. I have watched the ups and the downs that they have gone through, and it is truly amazing that today they are able to look back at the roller coaster and smile fondly.

So after watching two people build a life together for that long, then there should be something that you have learned from it all...right? Well I do think that I have learned some things. Hopefully I will be wise enough to apply and build upon them in my future.

1. You really have to like one another. Love is important, of course...but at the end of the day you have to enjoy spending time together b/c guess what? 30 yrs is a hell of a lot of time to spend together. My parents are friends. Things may not be perfect, but they really make one another laugh and they get along.

2. You need your own space/life/independent identity away from one another. My dad definitely had hobbies, like karate, and these were a part of who he was. I can't really explain why this was a benefit, but I always got the impression that the happiness/relaxation/break that he got away from home made him a happier person at home.

3. Most importantly, you have to commit and stick it out...'ride w/the tide' as my friend's future mother-in-law would say. There were plenty of ups and downs b/c well...that's life and that's marriage. Its hard to share your whole world w/another person long term. However, if you break and run when things get hard, then you will never make it to the finish line bc...things will always get hard. It wasn't easy for my parents, but they really seem proud and grateful for their life together.

I'm sure this is a waaaaaaaaaaay simplified discussion on what it takes to make a marriage work. However, these are some of the things that I have observed (and heard from other long time married couples) as examples of what it took to make it this far.

Did I miss anything?
Ok...little bit of good and a little bit of bad.

So on the fiscal side of things...Last night I talked myself out of making a couple of shoe purchases that I really really didn't need. Behold the fabulousness!

Now...I had been wanting a rain boot since it is not uncommon for the bottom of my pants to get wet going to and from work. Plus, blue is my favorite color. At $54.00 I thought they were reasonably priced, but alas...iaintgonbeabletodoit! There was also a cute sandal, which I felt I needed since my black sandals got painted on during the bathroom remodel. However, I also put those back, and I will just go w/o until things are more stable.

On the workout side of things...I skipped this morning's yoga session. I stayed up late last night doing some work. Then I woke up around 4 in the am, and couldn't fall back asleep until just before my alarm went off. Needless to say, I couldn't pull myself out of bed. I am planning to get it in tonight, though. It is a must. As I have always said...you feel better about yourself when you are working out. Today I am feeling pretty yucky, so I need to step up my game for the rest of the week and the weekend.

@ BS...since you're always asking everyone else about their fitness updates...what happened to you getting diesel? How is that coming?

Questions:

Is my blog getting boring guys? Honestly. Since my blog isn't really goal oriented anymore, then I wonder if folks are still reading. Just let me know if I should continue, re-vamp, or shut it down.

Thanks!
Hey all - So you know that I was supposed to be pampering and loving (not that kinda loving) ME on Friday evenings. I have NOT been successful at keeping this promise to myself. I did spend one evening giving myself two lovely facials, which was fairly relaxing. Also, I took time to get my nails done about two weeks ago, which also felt good. However, this is all that I've done on this front. Not sufficient at all. I have got to do better.

Somehow finances or fatigue or other tasks just seems to get in the way. I'm sure that this scenario isn't uncommon or unheard of. Other things and people just always seem to take precedence over ourselves. However, if I don't take care of Me, then there will be nothing left to share with others. Therefore I have to re-focus and Do Better!

I've already booked a couple of 'relaxation' sessions in my mind. I am planning to get my nails done this coming Saturday, and I am determined to book a spa appointment while I am in the Bahamas. I have really only ever had 1 spa treatment...Ever, which is no small tragedy. Everything is super expensive, but I am going to try my best to save and schedule another massage. I've only had one before, but it was so relaxing that I want another.
Once I get back home then I have to re-commit to booking special time every Friday. Maybe its a facial, maybe its a mani/pedi, maybe its just quietly reading a book on my balcony. Whatever it is, I am going to spend time every Friday evening doing something that celebrates and nurtures ME!
Here's the workout schedule for this week:

Tues - Yoga
Wed - Yoga
Thurs - Swimming*
Fri - Swimming*
Sun - Yoga

*I'll be out of town this week, and the hotel only has an outdoor pool (wack azz GA). Anywho, I have to assess the situation when I get there, but I am planning to bring my LA Fitness card just incase I can't swim at the hotel.
I had nachos for lunch :-( Bad me!

New topic **I told ya I have a lot of energy today**

First This: Jamie Lynn Spears gives birth at 17 yrs old.

Then This: Local high school girls make pregnancy pact.

What is really going on with our kids? Is it that young girls are in such need for love and affection that they look to sex and their babies as examples of unconditional love? Is it that our society has too greatly normalized teen pregnancy, such that it is no-longer taboo. I don't know, but this is certainly a problem.

What do you think?
I feel restless today. I don't know what it is, but I just don't want to sit still. It's like I have nervous energy that I just can't burn off. I swam for 45 mins this morning, but to no avail. If I don't chill out by later tonight, then I'll have to resort to my sure thing...wine ;-)

However, while I'm posting...I just started thinking about travel. This year I got to visit Rome and Florence, which were wonderful cities. It was my 1st time going overseas, and though it was sometimes scary, it was a great trip and a great experience. There are so many more places that I want to see...places that I haven't even thought of yet. For instance, I just learned this morning that there is a place called the Amalfi Coast. Check it out. Before today, I thought that Amalfi was just a hotel in downtown Chicago. Who knew? Also, in the last year I have had 3 co-workers visit Bora Bora on their honeymoon, and other friends who have been to Dubai, The French Riviera, and half of the rest of the globe. I am hearing and learning about awesome places everyday.

I definitely want to get to see all of these places that I read about or see in other people's pictures, but I guess that sometimes I just wonder if it is really going to happen. I'm trying to be strategic about saving and making my dreams a reality, but you just never know. Maybe that is why I am feeling so anxious today. There are so many things that I want to do and accomplish in life. I guess that traveling is just one of those things. Sometimes I just feel so unsure of the future. Will my dreams really come true, or will I just look back 20, 30, 40+ years from now at all of the things that I wish I had done and all of the places that I wish I had visited? I don't know.

Anywho, I try to just hold on to my faith and believe that the rest of my life will be filled with happiness and accomplishments. My faith actually is my secret weapon, and it keeps me positive and excited for the future most of the time. Does anybody else ever feel like this, or are hormones just getting the best of me today?

Sooooo...today was one of my 1st interactions with the local NABA chapter. The event was a scholarship lunch held at one of the city's baseball fields. Initially tickets were $60 a piece, which I just couldn't afford right now w/my current expenses (we'll speak more on that later in the summer). However, they decided to give up 10 complimentary tickets (I guess there were extras), and I was able to obtain one. All that I needed to do was pick up my ticket from Will Call before the start of the game.

...So I arrive at 11:40 for the lunch, which is scheduled to begin at noon. Of course, there is NO ticket for me at Will Call. The guy can't find anything under my name, the coordinator of the event's name, or the name of the organization. You know that I am standing outside thinking "See...this right here is exactly why I don't f*@ks w/Black folks." However, I'm trying to remain calm and think through the situation. I spot a black guy in a suit, and assume that he must be there for NABA as well. It was a gamble, but sure enough I was right. So I explain the situation, and ask if he can take my name and number and communicate the situation to the coordinator upstairs. Thankfully, he found the coordinator, got me a ticket, and came back to get me. Whew!

Now, I really don't know what actually happen. I spoke to the coordinator, and she says that she has no record of me receiving a ticket. However, I double checked my email when I got home, and I definitely did. Either way, it didn't matter at that point b/c I was in. The event itself was rather pleasant, though...a bit disorganized, but I still enjoyed it. The college students received some pretty hefty scholarships $1500 - $3000, and I met folks from several other firms. Plus I ran into a few people that I knew in the past.

In spite of the earlier mishap, I plan to stay involved and get to know more people.
Sooooo...I MADE myself go to the gym and swim this morning, and I am planning the same agenda for tomorrow. I don't know what my problem has been lately, but I have been eating, eating, eating, and eating. It is just so frustrating that even when I know how to eat right, I am still tempted to make the wrong choices. I seriously see why severely overweight people talk about food addictions. It's like CRACK! Seriously, it's scary.

Anyway, my workouts are my only saving grace. The routine this week has been the following:
Mon - Yoga
Wed - Yoga
Thurs - Swim
Fri - Swim
Sat - Yoga

I am completely exhausted and in need of a nap right now, but exercising is the LEAST that I can do. I'll update you next week on whether or not I am sticking with the routine. Remember...sexy, bikini body in 3 weeks.

Also - as a goals update...This morning I participated in a planning call for an upcoming diversity golf outing. We'll be inviting a lot of company executives to the event, so it should give me more exposure within the firm. AND I am attending a NABA Scholarship Lunch today. At 1st I wasn't going to go b/c the tickets were $60. However, I guess they had 10 left, which they decided to simply give away, and I scored one. Sweet. I'll let you know how it goes.
