Ok...so I'm back from a lovely weekend in the Bahamas. I hung out with old friends, made new friends, and most important I got to celebrate the union of two people who love one another immensly.

Sooo...I know that you all are wondering what are the results of the 'Get it right, Git it tight' work out plan. Well feast your eyes...

Not bad, huh?

However, I DEFINITELY took full advantage of the all-inclusive package, so tomorrow we are starting the 'Keep it right, Keep it tight' workout plan. I hit up the grocery store this evening, so now I can start packing breakfast and lunch again. This should help to keep my eating and snacking under control.

I need one full night of sleep, so I won't be doing a 5:30 workout tomorrow morning. However, I do plan to start back up on Wednesday. The plan is to do morning yoga for the rest of the week and swim this weekend. Whew...well I can confidently say that I have made this change a way of life.
I don't usually do politics on this blog but...

ABSOLUTE.BULLSHIT!!!

I really don't know which I hate more...the fact that this drawing was created and published or the fact that some idiots in this nation will be swayed by it. I mean really, I thought that we had squashed this non-sense. Here is a quick rundown of why the New Yorker is getting a serious cuss out in my head right now...

1. After the Trinity United Church of CHRIST scandal how can we possibly still be accusing Obama of being Muslim?

2. Being Muslim does not equate to being a terrorist.

3. Refusing to bend over and kiss America's ass does not equate to being un-patriotic, hating the nation, or disrespecting the flag.

4. Michelle Obama doesn't even have natural hair. Clearly this is how they will always see us. AND AND AND natural hair isn't a freakin' insult.

5. They totally stepped on my favorite shot of 'Team Barack and Michelle Obama'...the fist pound.

6. Most importantly...people in this nation are tooo STUPID and PREJUDICED to realize that electing a Black president is one of the best things that this nation can do for its global image. Barack Obama is the best (most non-threatening...unless of course you're looking for a Clarence Thomas) Black man for the job. It's time to take our heads out of our asses and realize that "Hey, the rest of the world (even our allies) don't think that we're big shit. Most of them despise our ignorance and arrogance. If we don't fall back, take a serious look at who we are and what we stand for, and stop trying to pimp the rest of the world for our own advancement, then we're going to end up broken and ruined like so many nations before us." Obama may not be the answer to all of our problems, but as long as we stay locked in this short-sighted, race-based, change adverse, the rest of the world owes us mindset, then our sustainability as a nation is limited.

That.Is.All!

On my to do list... a visit to Fleet Feet Sports!

I've been hearing a lot about this place, but have yet to check it out. According to their website (and the word on the street), they custom size your foot and assess your gait in order to provide the best shoe fit possible. Now this may not be important for everyone, but it sure is to me.

I usually don't tell people this but...I have flat feet. I mean really flat feet. Like my ankles brush against one another and the alignment btwn my feet and knees is just wrong. What's the result? Lots of knee problems. Now I don't do to much exercising in shoes anymore (hooray for swimming and yoga!), but when I DO get out on the treadmill or track I'd like to have the right amount of support. Well this store is geared towards giving you just that. Here is the process that makes it all happen:

Step One: Welcome and Explanation of our Fitting Process
Every process has a beginning point, fitting our customers begins with “hello” and an explanation of the steps we take to fit you for the best shoe for your needs.

Step Two: Getting to Know You
We take time to ask questions about your current activity, such as how often you run, how far and if you have a goal in mind. We also discuss any existing or past injuries and talk about the footwear you currently use.

Step Three: Measurement
Several measurements of each foot help us determine proper sizing. We record both unweighted (seated) and weighted (standing) measurements.

We aren't doctors and don't pretend to be, but we will take a look at your feet for signs that will help us fit you properly and determine any special needs.

Step Four: Gait Analysis
We'll bring out a neutral “test” shoe and observe as you run or walk a short distance. This helps us understand how you move and the biomechanics of your gait.

Step Five: Fitting and Recommendations
Based on our findings we will bring out the shoes that may work best for you. We'll carefully inspect the fit and watch as you run or walk in each shoe. We'll discuss the options, provide you with our recommendations and answer any questions.

Step Six: The Decision
This one is all you since you are the only person who knows how the shoes actually feel.

Step Seven: Ready to Go
Now that you've made a decision, we'll talk about how to properly break in your new shoes, help with any other product needs you may have and make sure you're ready to get the best results!

I have heard that the prices are pretty comparable with your average Foot Locker/Champs' store, so I think that I'm going to check them out. They have locations all over the country, so check their website for a store near you!

I'm baaaaaaaack! Here are a few more quick updates.

On the professional development front, I have been talked into signing up for Toast Masters. If you aren't familiar with the organization, then the general gist is that they are a group of people geared towards increasing their public speaking capabilities. You sign up with a group of people and are required to make 12 speeches over a one or two year time period. You present in front of others in the group and they provide feedback on your speech. After you have completed your 12 speeches, then you are Toast Master certified, and hopefully a better speaker. Now I didn't really want to sign up b/c I tend to think that I am already a very good public speaker. However, practice never hurt anyone, and its been a while since I spoke in front of a group of complete strangers. I don't want to lose my touch ;-) I think that one of my speeches will be about blogging.

On a different note...my 1st event as co-chair of the African American Affinity Group has been canceled :-( Our sponsor gave us the thumbs down, which sucks. I guess it is back to the drawing board. Maybe we can do a 'Lunch and Learn' instead. We could ask a black partner to come and share his/her experiences on progressing through the firm. Hmmm...we shall see.

As for taking time for Me...I didn't get to go to the spa this weekend. My schedule just filled up, and I wanted to spend time with friends b4 the weekend was over. However, I am determined to make an appointment for a facial this weekend. As soon as the spas open, I am calling and booking.

Pics and more updates to come later.

Suuuuuuper quick updates...

So today I'm rocking a black and white dress w/sexy red patent leather pumps. The hair is braided back and swooped to the side, and I am looking like a model. Why you ask? Because I was born this way? Well that's only partially correct. The bigger reason is that I'm going to be in a photo shoot today! Many of you know that I participated in a mentorship program this year, and the firm is going to be taking photos of the mentors to document the program. I don't know if I'll end up on some sort of company-wide brochure or anything, but I am certainly prepared.

Yesterday I got to visit a Hindu temple. My co-worker invited me, and it was very cool. She took me around to all of the statutes of the deities and explained their purpose. Then she took a moment for quiet reflection/prayer at each one, while I browsed. It was a beautiful space, and I learned a lot. I definitely encourage you to learn about other religions. It's not a matter of weakening in your own faith, but rather gaining a respect for someone else's. I may not be a convert, but I am always glad to see someone else enjoy a relationship with a higher power, which gives them a sense of right/wrong/hope/love/justice/faith.

Lastly, I am off to the Bahamas tomorrow. I have done my very best at hanging w/the workout plan. I got a work out in everyday w/the exception of Friday and Sunday. The diet wasn't great, but I think that the body is looking JUST RIGHT. Pics to come! Overall, I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a relaxing and memorable weekend. I'll blog more when I return.

Ciao!

Gardasil concerns.

Now I know that there are all kinds of adverse reactions to new drugs, but hearing these occurrences after this drug was pushed upon the public is certainly concerning. Hopefully no other major side-effects are found.
Random comment...I must get the full DVD sets of my four favorite sitcoms of all time:

The Cosby Show
A Different World
The Golden Girls
Designing Women

Aaah, I can watch those re-runs again and again and again.

Life begins today!

These words came to mind while I was cleaning my house today. I was moving a perpetual calendar that my mother gave me...you know the kind...they are made up of blocks with months and numbers, but not years. You can forever arrange it into the correct month and day combination. Sorry, I have digressed. As I was moving the calendar, I looked at the date...my birthday. I pretty much never advance this thing except for on my birthday (and maybe one or two other special days out of the year). Today was really no different at all. I just felt like "What's the point?"

Now on a side note...as I was cleaning I was also going through a mental goals check. A while ago, I blogged about wanting to take myself and my life to a whole other level over the next 18 months. I think that now my motivation is a bit different, but the goal and timeline is still very valid. I'm ready to begin my adult life. Don't get me wrong...I'm not a wreck or anything like that, but I can be (and I want to be) better.

So needless to say...I figured Today is the Day! Why continue to wait? I think that for a long time I was waiting for some milestone to happen in my life to begin adopting certain grown up characteristics...turning 30, getting married, making manager. These are definitely all milestones that I have said to myself "Well I'll do XYZ when I (fill in the blank)." That's no way to live. I think that sometimes you have to grow and advance as a person to even make it to those milestones (except for turning 30...in that case you just have to...you know...stay alive).

Now its a bit difficult for me to articulate what exactly I want to accomplish. There are some clear ways that I can improve (like paying bills on time w/o fail and maintaining a cleaner home). However, its really just a shift in mindset. It's getting away from procrastinating and really focusing on becoming the Me that I envision myself being. It may be a matter of continuing to develop my cooking skills. It may be a matter of remodeling my home (a topic that I will post on next). It may be a matter of honing my personal style or focusing on growing my finances. Sorry if this all sounds a bit scatter brained :-) I just envision my life differently, and I am ready to begin living the life that I envisioned TODAY!

So suffice it to say that I set my blocks to July 5th to signal a new start. Of course, its scary b/c I don't want to flake out on myself, so I'll be blogging about the challenges that I take on and concur. Fun times.
Workout tips and recommendations.

Hey all. I've been browsing the internet, and I came across some great articles for exercising and getting into shape. Check them out!

Do you have a purpose in life?

This is one of those deep philosophical questions that some people spend their entire lives trying to find the answer to. At the same time, there are other people who know their purpose very early on and spend the rest of their lives working towards it.

I can't say that I feel that I have a particular calling or distinct purpose...at least not one that I have discovered. Things like giving back to my community and being a good Christian are high on my priority list, so I guess that the activities involved with those two goals are how I feel that I am making my mark on this earth. However, what I ultimately believe is that everything happens for a reason, and everything we do has a purpose. I like to think that all of the things (good and bad) that happen to me in life are for a reason and fit into some greater plan of good.

At the end of the day I don't really need to be famous or immortalized or talked about for decades to come. I will feel pleased if I am successful at maintaining and building upon my strong relationship with God, honoring myself (mentally, physically, and spiritually), being a good person (daughter, friend, employee, maybe wife/mother), giving something back to both those who've helped me along the way and those who do not know how to help themselves, and truly appreciating and enjoying the journey. If I am lucky enough to say that I accomplished those things, then I can say that I fulfilled my purpose in life. Luckily that list doesn't actually look too long or difficult ;-)

**singing** "Summer, Summer, Summertime!"

Aaaah, Will Smith you know just how to get the season started. While driving to work in the mornings I usually listen to the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Well all of this week they are in beautiful St. Thomas (U.S.V.I)! Let me tell you...hearing them interview the various island representatives got me so HYPED for the Bahamas!!! The mention of rum cake and snorkeling had me smiling and yearning for the tropics.

Plus plus plus...I went bikini shopping last night. I must say that the situation was not bad a'tall. After 2 solid weeks of working out...the body is going to be bananas. They aren't even ready for what I'm about to be doing!

So let's recap...we're starting of w/uber fine ME! + 2 new hott bikinis + all the alcohol that I can consume (prepaid & you know that I don't have any hangups about what time of the day I can drink) + beautiful setting + great friends = 1 hell of an awesome getaway!

Soooo...the plan is to work out everyday for the next week and a half. Once I get to the Bahamas...it's pretty much a wrap. The only exercise that I am trying to get is the walk back and forth to the bar ;-).

Here is the schedule:

Mon - Yoga (check)
Tues - Swim
Wed - Swim
Thurs - Yoga
Fri - Swim
Sat - Yoga
Sun - Yoga
Mon - Swim
Tues- Yoga
Wed - Swim

Whew..this is not going to be fun. Now I'm heading out to purchase a new bikini today, so I am expecting that image in my head to be sufficient motivation. Nobody likes a soft belly.

Just wanted to make it known that the Turkey Lasagna was...AWESOME!!!!

It took a while to prepare from prep to completion (about an hour and a half), but it was ultimately a very good dish. The parents loved and appreciated it, which is what was most important. My only tip (if you're trying to duplicate on your own) is to soak the noodles in boiling water. The recipe calls for 'hottest tap water', however they could have been a bit more tender for my tastes, so in the future I will be soaking them in water that has come to a boil instead.

:-)

You like me! You really really like me!!!!

At least that is what I was thinking when I got a call from my partner today! I have been approved for a HIGH IMPACT AWARD!!!! That's a 5% bonus in my paycheck today, baby!!! Whooo hoooo...way to make my day!

I have to admit that this was right on time. Between just us...I was feeling a bit down this week. I have been working hard on a weekly report, and I tell ya...I will work on it for hours, send it to the manager, and then he has a whole host of revisions for me within the hour. I was just feeling that I wasn't giving him what he was looking for, and that he wasn't satisfied w/my work. I may still need to step up my game on the report, but at least I know that I am pulling my weight.

On other career improvements...I am on a different client this week where I am performing mostly a reviewer/advisor role. I have been asserting myself and securely stating my opinions, and I really think that it is paying off. The client team that I am working with seem to really respect me and value my opinions. I've grown more confident in my experience and judgement, and I am allowing it to reflect in my demeanor and behavior.

Really quick goals update...

I went to lunch w/two co-workers today to discuss what we call our 'African American Affinity Group' (AAAG). The current leader for the AAAG is preparing to go on maternity leave, so a fellow co-worker and I are going to lead the group in her absence. Yay! We're pretty excited. We identified some high level goals to focus on, which are Professional Development, Recruiting & On-boarding, and Social. We also identified some general ideas which should help us meet these goals. My new co-lead and I are going to narrow the goals down into a few specific activities for the year and then recruit some individuals to help execute each. Our 1st task is to coordinate an event for the staff and interns.

Wish us luck!
Ok - so to celebrate my parent's wedding anniversary I have decided to cook them dinner. Sorry folks...I just don't have anymore money to buy gifts or take folks out to dinner. We're taking it back to elementary school w/hand-crafted gifts.

Now I know some of you might be thinking...really...you?...cooking? However, I'm planning to keep it as simple as possible w/some sort of 1 dish meal that can get the job done. Here are my options:

Turkey Lasagna -
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup chopped yellow onion (1 onion) 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 pounds sweet Italian turkey sausage, casings removed 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes in tomato puree 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, divided 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 pound lasagna noodles 15 ounces ricotta cheese 3 to 4 ounces creamy goat cheese, crumbled 1 cup grated Parmesan, plus 1/4 cup for sprinkling 1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten 1 pound fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Heat the olive oil in a large (10 to 12-inch)
skillet. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes over medium-low heat, until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the sausage and cook over medium-low heat, breaking it up with a fork, for 8 to 10 minutes, or until no longer pink. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, 2 tablespoons of the parsley, the basil, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Simmer, uncovered, over medium-low heat, for 15 to 20 minutes, until thickened.

Meanwhile, fill a large bowl with the hottest tap water. Add the noodles and allow them to sit in the water for 20 minutes. Drain.

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta, goat cheese, 1 cup of Parmesan, the egg, the remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Set aside.

Ladle 1/3 of the sauce into a 9 by 12 by 2-inch rectangular baking dish, spreading the sauce over the bottom of the dish. Then add the layers as follows: half the pasta, half the mozzarella, half the ricotta, and one third of the sauce. Add the rest of the pasta, mozzarella, ricotta, and finally, sauce. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of Parmesan. Bake for 30 minutes, until the sauce is bubbling.

Shrimp Gumbo Casserole -
Gumbo: 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 bay leaves 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon lemon-pepper seasoning 1 1/2 teaspoons House Seasoning, recipe follows 1 cup chicken or fish stock 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes 10-ounce package frozen cut okra 2 cups shrimp, cleaned, peeled, and deveined

Topping: 1 egg, beaten 1/3 cup milk 12-ounce package corn muffin mix

In an iron skillet, saute onion and celery in oil. Add bay leaves, thyme, lemon-pepper seasoning and House Seasoning. Pour in stock and add tomatoes and okra. Cover pot and gently simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in shrimp.

To prepare the topping, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Mix together egg and milk, add to muffin mix, and combine until just well-blended. Drop by tablespoonfuls on top of hot shrimp mixture, leaving the center uncovered. Bake 15 to 20 minutes.

Cook's Note: This Southern dish usually is prepared and served in an iron skillet, but may be cooked in a frying pan with an ovenproof handle.

House Seasoning: 1 cup salt 1/4 cup black pepper 1/4 cup garlic powder
Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

What do you think of the two choices? I am thinking I'll do garlic bread or corn bread as an accompaniment. I will prob also do some sort of wine/alcoholic beverage and a store bought dessert.

30 yrs of marriage...this is the accomplishment that my parents achieved today. It is so amazing that I really don't know just what to say about it. I have watched the ups and the downs that they have gone through, and it is truly amazing that today they are able to look back at the roller coaster and smile fondly.

So after watching two people build a life together for that long, then there should be something that you have learned from it all...right? Well I do think that I have learned some things. Hopefully I will be wise enough to apply and build upon them in my future.

1. You really have to like one another. Love is important, of course...but at the end of the day you have to enjoy spending time together b/c guess what? 30 yrs is a hell of a lot of time to spend together. My parents are friends. Things may not be perfect, but they really make one another laugh and they get along.

2. You need your own space/life/independent identity away from one another. My dad definitely had hobbies, like karate, and these were a part of who he was. I can't really explain why this was a benefit, but I always got the impression that the happiness/relaxation/break that he got away from home made him a happier person at home.

3. Most importantly, you have to commit and stick it out...'ride w/the tide' as my friend's future mother-in-law would say. There were plenty of ups and downs b/c well...that's life and that's marriage. Its hard to share your whole world w/another person long term. However, if you break and run when things get hard, then you will never make it to the finish line bc...things will always get hard. It wasn't easy for my parents, but they really seem proud and grateful for their life together.

I'm sure this is a waaaaaaaaaaay simplified discussion on what it takes to make a marriage work. However, these are some of the things that I have observed (and heard from other long time married couples) as examples of what it took to make it this far.

Did I miss anything?
Ok...little bit of good and a little bit of bad.

So on the fiscal side of things...Last night I talked myself out of making a couple of shoe purchases that I really really didn't need. Behold the fabulousness!

Now...I had been wanting a rain boot since it is not uncommon for the bottom of my pants to get wet going to and from work. Plus, blue is my favorite color. At $54.00 I thought they were reasonably priced, but alas...iaintgonbeabletodoit! There was also a cute sandal, which I felt I needed since my black sandals got painted on during the bathroom remodel. However, I also put those back, and I will just go w/o until things are more stable.

On the workout side of things...I skipped this morning's yoga session. I stayed up late last night doing some work. Then I woke up around 4 in the am, and couldn't fall back asleep until just before my alarm went off. Needless to say, I couldn't pull myself out of bed. I am planning to get it in tonight, though. It is a must. As I have always said...you feel better about yourself when you are working out. Today I am feeling pretty yucky, so I need to step up my game for the rest of the week and the weekend.

@ BS...since you're always asking everyone else about their fitness updates...what happened to you getting diesel? How is that coming?

Questions:

Is my blog getting boring guys? Honestly. Since my blog isn't really goal oriented anymore, then I wonder if folks are still reading. Just let me know if I should continue, re-vamp, or shut it down.

Thanks!
Hey all - So you know that I was supposed to be pampering and loving (not that kinda loving) ME on Friday evenings. I have NOT been successful at keeping this promise to myself. I did spend one evening giving myself two lovely facials, which was fairly relaxing. Also, I took time to get my nails done about two weeks ago, which also felt good. However, this is all that I've done on this front. Not sufficient at all. I have got to do better.

Somehow finances or fatigue or other tasks just seems to get in the way. I'm sure that this scenario isn't uncommon or unheard of. Other things and people just always seem to take precedence over ourselves. However, if I don't take care of Me, then there will be nothing left to share with others. Therefore I have to re-focus and Do Better!

I've already booked a couple of 'relaxation' sessions in my mind. I am planning to get my nails done this coming Saturday, and I am determined to book a spa appointment while I am in the Bahamas. I have really only ever had 1 spa treatment...Ever, which is no small tragedy. Everything is super expensive, but I am going to try my best to save and schedule another massage. I've only had one before, but it was so relaxing that I want another.
Once I get back home then I have to re-commit to booking special time every Friday. Maybe its a facial, maybe its a mani/pedi, maybe its just quietly reading a book on my balcony. Whatever it is, I am going to spend time every Friday evening doing something that celebrates and nurtures ME!
Here's the workout schedule for this week:

Tues - Yoga
Wed - Yoga
Thurs - Swimming*
Fri - Swimming*
Sun - Yoga

*I'll be out of town this week, and the hotel only has an outdoor pool (wack azz GA). Anywho, I have to assess the situation when I get there, but I am planning to bring my LA Fitness card just incase I can't swim at the hotel.
I had nachos for lunch :-( Bad me!

New topic **I told ya I have a lot of energy today**

First This: Jamie Lynn Spears gives birth at 17 yrs old.

Then This: Local high school girls make pregnancy pact.

What is really going on with our kids? Is it that young girls are in such need for love and affection that they look to sex and their babies as examples of unconditional love? Is it that our society has too greatly normalized teen pregnancy, such that it is no-longer taboo. I don't know, but this is certainly a problem.

What do you think?
I feel restless today. I don't know what it is, but I just don't want to sit still. It's like I have nervous energy that I just can't burn off. I swam for 45 mins this morning, but to no avail. If I don't chill out by later tonight, then I'll have to resort to my sure thing...wine ;-)

However, while I'm posting...I just started thinking about travel. This year I got to visit Rome and Florence, which were wonderful cities. It was my 1st time going overseas, and though it was sometimes scary, it was a great trip and a great experience. There are so many more places that I want to see...places that I haven't even thought of yet. For instance, I just learned this morning that there is a place called the Amalfi Coast. Check it out. Before today, I thought that Amalfi was just a hotel in downtown Chicago. Who knew? Also, in the last year I have had 3 co-workers visit Bora Bora on their honeymoon, and other friends who have been to Dubai, The French Riviera, and half of the rest of the globe. I am hearing and learning about awesome places everyday.

I definitely want to get to see all of these places that I read about or see in other people's pictures, but I guess that sometimes I just wonder if it is really going to happen. I'm trying to be strategic about saving and making my dreams a reality, but you just never know. Maybe that is why I am feeling so anxious today. There are so many things that I want to do and accomplish in life. I guess that traveling is just one of those things. Sometimes I just feel so unsure of the future. Will my dreams really come true, or will I just look back 20, 30, 40+ years from now at all of the things that I wish I had done and all of the places that I wish I had visited? I don't know.

Anywho, I try to just hold on to my faith and believe that the rest of my life will be filled with happiness and accomplishments. My faith actually is my secret weapon, and it keeps me positive and excited for the future most of the time. Does anybody else ever feel like this, or are hormones just getting the best of me today?

Sooooo...today was one of my 1st interactions with the local NABA chapter. The event was a scholarship lunch held at one of the city's baseball fields. Initially tickets were $60 a piece, which I just couldn't afford right now w/my current expenses (we'll speak more on that later in the summer). However, they decided to give up 10 complimentary tickets (I guess there were extras), and I was able to obtain one. All that I needed to do was pick up my ticket from Will Call before the start of the game.

...So I arrive at 11:40 for the lunch, which is scheduled to begin at noon. Of course, there is NO ticket for me at Will Call. The guy can't find anything under my name, the coordinator of the event's name, or the name of the organization. You know that I am standing outside thinking "See...this right here is exactly why I don't f*@ks w/Black folks." However, I'm trying to remain calm and think through the situation. I spot a black guy in a suit, and assume that he must be there for NABA as well. It was a gamble, but sure enough I was right. So I explain the situation, and ask if he can take my name and number and communicate the situation to the coordinator upstairs. Thankfully, he found the coordinator, got me a ticket, and came back to get me. Whew!

Now, I really don't know what actually happen. I spoke to the coordinator, and she says that she has no record of me receiving a ticket. However, I double checked my email when I got home, and I definitely did. Either way, it didn't matter at that point b/c I was in. The event itself was rather pleasant, though...a bit disorganized, but I still enjoyed it. The college students received some pretty hefty scholarships $1500 - $3000, and I met folks from several other firms. Plus I ran into a few people that I knew in the past.

In spite of the earlier mishap, I plan to stay involved and get to know more people.
Sooooo...I MADE myself go to the gym and swim this morning, and I am planning the same agenda for tomorrow. I don't know what my problem has been lately, but I have been eating, eating, eating, and eating. It is just so frustrating that even when I know how to eat right, I am still tempted to make the wrong choices. I seriously see why severely overweight people talk about food addictions. It's like CRACK! Seriously, it's scary.

Anyway, my workouts are my only saving grace. The routine this week has been the following:
Mon - Yoga
Wed - Yoga
Thurs - Swim
Fri - Swim
Sat - Yoga

I am completely exhausted and in need of a nap right now, but exercising is the LEAST that I can do. I'll update you next week on whether or not I am sticking with the routine. Remember...sexy, bikini body in 3 weeks.

Also - as a goals update...This morning I participated in a planning call for an upcoming diversity golf outing. We'll be inviting a lot of company executives to the event, so it should give me more exposure within the firm. AND I am attending a NABA Scholarship Lunch today. At 1st I wasn't going to go b/c the tickets were $60. However, I guess they had 10 left, which they decided to simply give away, and I scored one. Sweet. I'll let you know how it goes.

Quick workouts for those who have no time...Tea, this is for you.

So there was definitely a time in my life where I simply could not find the time for a full hour work out. As a matter of fact, I find myself facing this time every fall when I begin working busy season hours. No way am I heading to work by 6:30 am, not returning until 8:30 pm (on an early night), and then exercising for an hour. Sorry. Nope. No way. Not gonna happen. However, what I have been able to convince myself to do were just a few quick exercises that would only take up about 15 - 30 mins. Sometimes I would do total body exercises (like a cardio dvd or dancing to my iPod). However, other times, I just focused on a particular part of my body (abs, legs, arms) and did a few select exercises to tone those areas. The workouts that I found in Shape, Self, and Essence (back in the day) magazines gave me great ideas. Here are a few that I think are really easy to incorporate in your life. All images and poses are from Self.com. Also, I would recommend substituting soup cans, jars of pasta sauce, or water bottles if you don't have weights.

ABs

Modified Jackknife

Lower your left leg as far as you can into a squat position (don't allow your knee to extend past your toes); hold for two counts and return to starting position. Repeat on opposite side, building up to 12 reps on each side. (This is an advanced move.)

Jazz Lunge

Ok...let's talk about career focus.

Some of you may know that I am up for promotion to manager next year. That means that I have this year to really shine. However, while getting promoted is my immediate goal...growing and developing long term are my overriding goals. As you can imagine, I have been thinking quite a bit about just how to do this.

Well, last week was a wonderful catalyst for me, as I was able to attend the National Association of Black Accountants annual convention. I learned a ton about myself, and really was able to get a handle on what I want for my career. There are a couple of areas that I am hoping to focus on...

1st - I am planning to really double my efforts and give 110%. This means to minimize my daily procrastination (not helped by the fact that I am blogging at work right now), and really focus on getting a set number of executables out the door by the end of the day. Also, I am going to be more proactive (increasing my D, for my DiSC profile folks ;-) by making more suggestions and initiating more projects/tasks on my team. This will definitely force me to step outside of my comfort zone and stretch beyond my current limits. However, this is how you grow, right? Lastly, and probably most importantly, I will need to really focus on delivering quality work on time. Of course, quality and budget are the backbone of all of our industries. Delivering in this arena are the minimum requirements for continued success.

2nd - I am planning to become more active within my profession. Previously I have not been very active within my local NABA chapter, which is really a shame. Now that I think about it, I doubt that my firm even has a strong presence at the city level. I am going to commit myself to attending as many chapter meetings and events as possible. My goal is to attend a chapter meeting and 1 external event/month. Additionally, I am a member of ISACA, an association for IT folks. I am setting a goal to get to 1 meeting/quarter. I just can't do it on a monthly basis, but I will set out to show up bi-monthly or quarterly.

3rd - This is probably the easiest/yet still challenging as it is merely a matter of stepping up in my current role. I am really going to re-commit myself to developing my relationships and having an impact within my company. I have been an active member of our affinity group since I was hired, however, I lessened my efforts over the last year in order to assist on another initiative. This year, I would like to re-focus on the affinity group, and seek out new ways to meet and develop our black professionals. The good thing is that I am already familiar with the group and the individuals. The tough thing (which we will simply think of as an opportunity for growth), is that I will really need to stay organized and on target. Putting together several quality programs/events throughout the year (in addition to my normal job responsibilities) will not be easy. Also, leadership in the affinity group often results in participation in other diversity and inclusiveness initiatives (hence me receiving a request this morning to help organize a diversity golf outing). However, as this is one of my personal passions, then I am quite up to the challenge.

Whew, that was a mouthful, but I will try to give you all updates throughout the year regarding my progress. I accepted the offer to help plan the Diversity Golf Outing (though I certainly know nothing about golfing), and I have scheduled a meeting with the head of the affinity group to discuss our 2009 plan. I think that I am off to a good start.
BACK ON THE GRIND!

Ok, I will admit that I fell off my grind a bit last week. I only got in two workouts for the whole week, and I ate pretty much anything and everything that I wanted to eat. However, this week I am back and focused. I kicked it off with an early AM workout this morning (5:30 yoga), and I am re-committed to my healthy eating plan. After all, I need to be in a bikini by the 2nd weekend in July. I actually feel totally confident and energized right now. It's weird, but I am just not concerned or dreading waking up early, and I have no desire to pig out. Its like I've either fully accepted it, or I have fully detached myself. I'm not sure which, but either way...I will be getting in 5 workouts each week and maintaining a healthy diet.

Ok - for real...I just realized that I had two back to back posts on death. Not cool. Just wanted to lighten the mood...Enjoy 'Eli, The Best Mang!':

**Let me just preface this with the following:
- It starts off slow, but minute 2:00 - 3:00 make it all worth it. Also, God knows my heart, and I pray he doesn't send me to a hot place for laughing at this.**

Sorry I have been away for so long. I have been distracted like crazy this week. I don't have much time, but I did want to take a second to comment on the death of Meet the Press host, Tim Russert. He died yesterday at the age of 58 of a massive heart attack leaving behind a loving wife as well as a son who just graduated from college. My heart truly truly goes out to his family, and I pray that God will help ease their pain.

Life is just so precious. Please take time to thank God for all of today's blessings. I know it can get difficult to see past your troubles, but we are all blessed in so many ways. Let's focus on those and go through our day with a smile.

:-)

Ok...back to serious stuff.

So when I woke up this morning, then 1st news story that I heard was about a teenager killed by a car that crashed into his bedroom in the early hours of the morning. This story really stopped me in my tracks. I hear one sad/tragic story after another everyday, but for some reason this one really got to me.

Tomorrow is not promised. I hear older people say this all the time, and while I have tried to live my life fully, this reality hadn't really sunk in with me. Sure I am grateful for every morning that I awake, but I hadn't really spent anytime thinking about just how precious life is. This child was just starting his life, and it was stolen from him while he slept.

Now, I'm not saying that you or I should live our lives in fear of it being snatched away. However, I am encouraging us all to really take advantage of the time that we have. Reach for your goals! Take time for yourself and those that you love! Make the most of your life! Tomorrow really is not promised, and there is no time for regrets. A speaker that I recently heard said something along the lines of "There are no test runs in life." This is your only chance. Don't waste it!
Looking and feeling good...

So, I have somewhat been on my workout grind. I've been making time for my swimming and yoga, and it's paying off. I was checking myself out in the mirror yesterday morning (yes, I check myself out often), and I must say that I was enjoying the view. The abs were tight, stomach was flat, and the boobs have gotten back a bit of their fullness. I was smiling to myself thinking "Damn, I look good."

Now, while I truly am in decent shape, it's still in large part a state of mind (as I have said before). When I work out I just feel better about myself. Of course, I am physically at my peak, but even if my physique doesn't change, the way that I see myself certainly does.

I am out of town at a convention this week, and I definitely want to feel confident. Sooo...I packed my swimsuit (hopefully the hotel has a lap pool), and I already rolled out of bed early this morning for a yoga session. Gotta stay on my grind.

I really really encourage those of you who are trying to get into shape to truly commit to your exercise plan. It will without a doubt raise your self esteem and give you the confidence and strength to continue forward to success!

Quick post:

Sorry for no recipe of the week this week. I actually did cook a chicken dish, but it was waaaay to complex yet not tasty enough to be worth posting. The biggest success is that my knife game is coming along nicely. I diced a whole red pepper, green pepper, and half an onion in about five minutes. Jealous, right?

Whew...on to lighter topics.

So I'm in the process of remodeling my home bathroom with the help of my dad, and I am sooooo grateful that he is here. Usually I feel as though I can do anything that I put my mind to, but I have found that this is JUST NOT THE CASE.

Boy, there are a couple of tasks that I have tried to complete and failed at miserably. Its baffling to me everytime b/c I tend to end up sitting on the floor with 'xyz tool' in my hand going " I KNOW I'm smart. I have how this is supposed to go all thought out in my mind. What's the problem?" Maybe it is simply the way that my mind works (I am a high level thinker/planner, rather than a detailed problem solver), but some tasks simply stop me dead in my tracks.

Anywho, with the help of my dad (I have been able to contribute in some ways...you know...passing tools...drawing lines...holding wood) I have successfully painted and installed new floor tiles, wainscot panels, a new sink & vanity, and a new mirror. Tomorrow we have just a few more projects to wrap up, and then I'm all set to go. I love it!
Sooo, as many of you all know I am a fairly religious person. I believe in God, I believe in Christ, and I believe in allowing God to guide my life.

Easier said than done...believe me. I find that we discover just how strong we truly are within our faith when it is put to the test. You quickly discover just how much you trust and believe God to nurture you and provide for your needs.

My thoughts today are on the topic of faith. Can you believe in and depend on your blessings even when you cannot see them? When I am going through tough times, then I sometimes think of God's faithful servant Jobe. God tested Jobe time and time again, and then blessed him 7 fold for passing each test. I sometimes wonder if God is testing me. While I DO NOT want to go through the sorts of trials that Jobe went through, I do try my best to maintain a spirit of meditation and prayer...thanking God for my blessings and trusting Him to bring me through. I certainly hope that my faith keeps me, and my reward is 7x the success and happiness that I have known thus far.

My mother always tells me "What God has for you...it is for you." I love that quote. It warms my heart everytime I think of it, and it reminds me to keep my focus on the Lord. As long as my relationship with Him is strong, then all other pieces will naturally fall into place.

Right now, the following scriptures have been making me smile. Hope that they make you smile from time to time as well.

As you have put your trust in Christ Jesus the Lord to save you from the punishment of sin, now let Him lead you in every step. Have your roots planted deep in Christ. Grow in Him. Get your strength from Him. Let Him make you strong in the faith as you have been taught. Your life should be full of thanks to Him.
- Colossians 2:6-7

Oh Lord, You are my God. I will praise You. I will give thanks to Your name. For You have been faithful to do great things, plans that you made long ago.
- Isaiah 25:1

If you could stay any age forever, what age would you choose? This is the discussion that my co-workers and I had today.

Honestly, 21 (my senior year in college) was a great year. This is probably the only year (as of right now) that I could relive again and again and again. Now that isn't to say that things aren't great now b/c they most definitely are. However, I just feel like the future has some great things to hold, and I just don't want to stop here.

How about you guys...is there any age that you could just stay forever?
Great Tings A Gwaaan!!

So this week I am looking forward to an awesome night of drinks and entertainment for the Sex and the City premiere.

Next week, I am excited about:
A - Seeing my dad
B - Remodeling my bathroom & part of my kitchen
C - Not having to go to work
D - Getting my nails done

The week after that I am excited about:
A - Seeing my love
B - Warm weather
C - Seeing my parents
D - Not having to go to work

Yay for upcoming events!

Whew, so I turned on my computer around 3:30 to do a simple task, and I am finished and through with work for the day at 4:30. Let the church say "Ya-men"! Praise the Lord for not procrastinating.

More on fiscal responsibility (or irresponsibility, in my case), shopping and weight loss.

So I just did $350 (post tax) worth of damage in Macy's. Now to my credit all of my items added up to over $630 (pre-tax) full price, so I did a great job at leveraging coupons and sales. Plus I may take a $40 pair of shoes back bringing me back down to $300. However, clearly this is waaaaayy more than I wanted to spend. I kinda tend to do more at Macy's than normal b/c I have a $100 monthly allowance there, and its a charge card (clearly easier to run the balance up than normal). However, I'd ordinarily like to keep it to $200 or less. BUT BUT BUT here is the thing...I NEEEEEED these things.

So I ended up getting 2 dresses, 1 pair of slacks, 1 pair of capris, 2 work tops, 2 summer tops, and 1 pair of gold sandals (prob going back). Now since I have lost weight few items in my closet really fit. Most of my clothes are still a size 14 or large. I just can't fit that anymore. Currently I am a 8 or S-M in tops and dresses and a 12 or L in pants and skirts. I have been recycling the same 5 or 6 outfits for the last several months, however, those are mostly winter items that are no longer cutting it now that the weather is warming. As a result, then when I find a decent item that really fits well...I feel like I should get it. I guess I'm just going to have to discipline myself to stay out of the stores for the next several months. I feel as though I got some good items to really enhance my wardrobe, so that's going to have to be it.

Now, let's also say that I can't gain not ONE POUND. The items that I bought fit PERFECTLY, so I'm giong to need to stay in the same size or smaller (only slightly) for these clothes to be long term items. Guess I'll be getting up and hitting the gym tomorrow :-)
Soooo...I've got some mid-term goals. Is that a real phrase? mid-term? Basically these are goals that I'd like to achieve in the next 18 months. They aren't quite short term (like my weight loss challenges have been). Yet, I can't really say that they are long term (like next 5 years kinda thing).

So anyway...I really want to make the most of this stage of my life before I progress to the next one. Lost of changes will be happening in 2009, and I want to make sure that I am really and truly prepared for them. So...'What kind of goals do you have?', you might ask. Well a few, and here is how I plan to achieve them.

The good thing is that most of my goals are just a matter of consistently maintaining the habits that I have created:

- Stepping up my cooking skills (This can be done by trying new recipes and keeping up my Sunday night dinners)

- Maintaining a healthy routine (Ideally, I would like to stick with my Sat & Sun swims and Yoga 3x a week. However, I have to weave biking in here somewhere, so that may become my Sat activity)

- Developing my relationship w/God (I plan to continue to read my Bible and meditate twice a week, plus Church on Sundays. I need to be more committed to attending Church at least every other week)

- Fixing up my condo (This project is in the works as my Dad is coming in just a week to help me make several updates. By the time that he leaves I will hopefully only have a few more renovations to make)

- Step up my game at work (I really need to begin operating like a well-oiled machine on the job. I think that I am already ahead of the game and performing at an 'exceeds expectations' level. However, I think that to be in a good place to get promoted, then I need to be at 'greatly exceeds expectations'. In order to do this I really really really need to shake off my procrastinating spirit. It is definitely holding me back. In addition to that I need to begin thinking one step ahead of my managers. By this time next year, I need to be at a place where I am managing upwards...i.e telling my boss what I need them to do in order to wrap up the project, rather than receiving direction from them. This is my biggest and most critical goal.

I hope that you all are taking this holiday weekend, which represents the beginning of a new season, to think about where you are and where you're going. Who do you want to be in life, and how are you going to get there? There really is no time like the present to begin moving towards your future.

Recipe of the week.

Ok, well this one is kind of a cheat b/c I've been making it for a while now. It's semi-homemade pizza.

I start with a Boboli pre-made pizza crust. For myself, the individual sizes are sufficient, but they have med and large sizes if you are cooking for more than one person. I apply a layer of pesto/basil pasta spread. These spreads are usually sold in the pasta aisle as spreads for Italian bread. They come with a tomato or garlic base as well, if you aren't much of a pesto person.

Once my sauce is applied, then I dice one clove of garlic and sprinkle that onto the pizza. I then add a thin layer of fresh spinach as well as a few thin slices of tomato.

Now I tend to make this pizza just before my fresh produce spoils, so I top it with whatever produce is in the house at the time...usually slices of green, red, yellow, or orange bell peppers. Mushrooms (rare), olives, and onions also work. Once I've added my toppings of choice, then I cover it with low-fat mozzarella cheese and sprinkle it with oregano and basil.

I prefer a crispy pizza crust, so I bake it (at 450 degrees) directly on the middle rack for about 10 mins, or until the cheese melts and browns on the edges.

Now, I rarely add meat to my pizza, but if I were going to cook it with meat, then I would probably opt for something pre-cooked. The pizza is in the oven for such a short time, that I would probably not rely on it to cook the meat. Pre-cooked chicken, pepperoni, ham, or Italian sausage are probably best.

Enjoy!

So at the beginning of this week I was feeling really good about myself. I accomplished pretty much everything that I wanted to accomplish, and I have a nice daily routine, of which I am proud (yoga, swimming, prayer, relaxing, etc.). Now I still feel great about myself (I am just where I need to be), however, I can now see more clearly where others fall short. My best friend (shot out to Tea and Such) recently posted about how others rarely do what they are supposed to do the 1st time around...causing you to have to sacrifice more time and effort to allow them to correct their mistake.

This weekend I took my car to the dealership for regular maintenance. They were supposed to change the oil and rotate the tires...now the steering wheel is pulling to the left, and I have to fight to keep the wheel straight. It is probably just a matter or re-aligning the wheels, but the dealership is super far from my house. Now instead of spending my Memorial Day weekend doing NOTHING, I have to contemplate whether or not I want to take the car back to be adjusted. ALSO, I am purchasing a custom countertop from IKEA. Twice I've had to call them and their countertop company to schedule appointments and follow-up. Mind you all of these calls were for items that they were supposed to contact me in regards to. It's like...it isn't the worst thing in the world, but I would prefer not to have to remember to do what I am supposed to do as well as to remind you to remember what you are supposed to do.

Whew...ok that was just a little rant. I'm still going to continue being happy about my life...but sometimes I just have to pause and shake my head at others.

Fiscal responsibility.

You know I hear sooo much talk of a recession, and until now I didn't really feel like I was affected by the economy. I have a good job, my gas is pretty much paid for, and my mortgage is fixed. However, I am noticing that month after month I have to dip into my savings (just a little) to cover all of the bills. Now that isn't to say that I am running in the red...its just to say that of the $X's that I put into my savings account, I'm taking a portion back out to cover expenses.

Now I don't know if this is the economy or just me not being responsible w/my money. Either way I am going to have to start paying attention to my budget. I am remodeling my condo for sure I am going to be hitting my saving there. However, I probably didn't need the $7 Whole Foods breakfast that I got this morning. I also have been doing it really big these past few months just because...by this I mean I splurged in Rome, I spent about $250 on my mom for Mother's day, I bought a new printer, and I've been buying new clothes every chance that I get. Now these are all purchases that I really believe in, and I have held back in other ways (i.e. taking lunch at least 3 times a week). However, given my future financial goals, I'm going to have to cut back on even some of my most needed/deserved purchases.

Le sigh. Tough times folks. Never the less, I am going to write out my month expenses and make a point to stay within my monthly allotments. Wish me luck.
What a great weekend. I was totally productive and got a bunch of stuff done. I swam for 45 mins - 1 hr both Saturday and Sunday. Then I ran several errands Saturday morning and went to church on Sunday morning. Awesomeness. All that I have left to do today is get some work done and clean up my place for Monday night guests. If I can get that done, then we can call it a successful weekend.

Self-esteem...what is it, and how do you get it?

This is a question being discussed on a message board that I regularly visit. You know, it is honestly something that I have never really given much thought to in the past. I mean, I have always just assumed that I am full of self-esteem. Why wouldn't I be? I have a great job and family/friends around me that support me. I'm in good shape, and can certainly turn some heads. Plus I'm smart, and I have always done well in all of my endeavors.

However, during the discussion I began to wonder if I think my self-esteem is high b/c it has never been tested before. Like, would I really feel so good about myself if things weren't going my way. I doubt it, but at the same time...certainly things like supportive friends and family are what help to build confidence and give you self-esteem. They are inter-related.

Anywho, here are some of the things that I do to keep my self-esteem high even during low-points in life.

1. Count my blessings. Even when something goes wrong, there are still a ton of things going right at any given moment. Thank God I haven't taken any serious hits (like homelessness, drug abuse, or unexpected loss of a loved one), so its pretty easy to see the bright side of life. I try to focus on my health and safety, and that of my family and friends. I thank God for my home and my job. I reflect on all the life has in store for me and those around me. Suddenly whatever I am upset about doesn't seem so bad.

2. I focus on what I like about myself. I can be moody, but really I am pretty darn funny. Plus I'll give my last to help and support those that I love, so I think about those characteristics. The back of my legs have an interesting wrinkle thing going on, but the front of my thighs are waaay more defined than ever before. My stomach is looking right, and my arms have some nice definition going on. Instead of being concerned about my view from the back, I check out the front view and smile.

3. I do what I can with what I've got. I'm not saying that I'm the next Iman, but I am a bit of a looker. I feel better when I look my best, so I try to put forth the time and the effort to make that happen. I buy clothes that flatter my body. I accent my face w/accessories and/or make up that highlight my best features, and on the days when I'm just too tired for all of that, then I smile to myself and think "These ppl don't even really know what I'm working with."

4. I keep ppl around me who build me up. If you ask my parents, my best friend, or my man about me, then they are going to have nothing but good things to say. They support me and stand by me through the think and thin. Guess what...those are the primary people that I keep close to me. People that tear me down rather than lift me up or cast doubt into my mind are people who are marginalized in my life. That's not to say that you should be delusional or only role w/people who tell you what you want to hear. However, it is to say that you should stay tight with those who have your best interests at heart.

I hope those techniques help some of you reading. I know that self-esteem is easier said than done, but I these are just some of the things that work for me.
Hopped on the scale this morning...163lbs. Eh, not bad. I dropped down to 153lbs after much fasting and exercising, but I wanted to hang out around 160lbs. That's a nice weight where my stomach is flat, I don't have to starve myself, and my ribs aren't poking through. Since I have been off of the biggest loser campaign, I have been eating poorly (at first) and now eating normally (healthy most of the time w/a few indulgences). I've been back on my yoga 3x a week for the past 3 weeks, and I am planning to get back into the pool this weekend. I know, I know, I have totally been putting it off. However, this weekend there should be no excuses. I have my schedule all planned out to allow for an hour swim first thing Sat and Sun morning. Once I get my cardio back into the mix, then I think I'll drop back down to my happy weight of 160lbs. If I can stay disciplined and maintain my normal/healthy eating, then I think that I can stay at this weight long-term. Yay me!

Ok, so here are some options for my Friday night spa treatments. Let me know what you think. These are the all natural treatments found at SpaIndex.com. I'll be back soon with some store bought recommendations.

An Oatmeal Blueberry Mask for Oily Skin
"This easy mask, used once or twice monthly, will both deep clean and exfoliate your face. It's particularly beneficial for oily skin, as it drying and pulling effect.
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup blueberries
1 tablespoon honey
5-6 almonds, whole

Puree all ingredients in a blender until finely blended. Spread mixture over your face, and allow to set and dry (10-15 minutes). Rinse with warm water, and splash your skin with cool water or toner. This mask be may stored in your refrigerator for up to one week, covered tightly."

Papaya and Pumpkin Facial

" 2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed
15 oz. can pure pumpkin
1 egg, beaten

1. Prepare the mask. Cut the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds. Scoop out the papaya fruit and mash it well to eliminate lumps in the mask. Beat the egg until it is frothy. Combine that with the papaya. Add the pumpkin to the egg/papaya mixture and whip together. You can also mix the ingredients in the blender or a food processor for an extra smooth mask.

2. Prepare your face. Wash with your daily cleanser and remove all residual makeup on your skin. Rinse with warm water. It's very important to have clean skin to ensure you get maximum benefits from the facial.

3. Apply the Mask. Cover your entire face, being careful to avoid the immediate eye area. If you have sensitive skin, test the mixture on your hand before spreading it on your face. You'll feel some tingling as the enzymes in the pumpkin go to work immediately -- gently exfoliating your top layer of skin. It works like a scrub without being abrasive to your skin. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes.

4. Rinse Off Mask. After you've relaxed for ten minutes it's time to rinse. The mask is fairly thick -- head for the kitchen sink.

5. Apply Toner & Moisturizer."

Avocado Hand and Foot Mask

"Mix together 1/4 to 1/2 mashed fresh avocado, 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon rice bran, and 10 drops of oil of evening primrose. Gently massage this treatment onto your hands and feet, and leave in place for 20 minutes. Rinse. This natural treatment will revive your dry, wrinkled and rough hands, feet, elbows and knees. The avocado and egg nourish the skin with proteins and oils; the rice bran exfoliates dead skin cells; the oil of evening primrose contains precious gamma linolenic acids, essential for healthy hair, skin and nails. Consider purchasing a small jar of Oil of Evening Primrose capsules from your health food store. Open one, and voila...you have the ingredient for this recipe."

Strawberry Hand and Foot Exfoliant

"8-10 Strawberries

2 tablespoons Apricot Oil (you may substitute olive oil)
1 teaspoon of coarse salt, such as Kosher Salt, or Sea Salt

Mix together all ingredients into a paste, massage into hands and feet, rinse, and pat dry. "

What do you think? Any of these sound good, or am I a crazy person?

Ok, so my new routine is underway and not too bad.

I've been getting up at 6 on Mon and Wed to read the Bible and pray. I own the NIV Student Bible (found here), which has several different reading tracks (2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 years). I decided to start at the beginning and just work my way through the three year track. Since I am planning to make this an on-going practice, then I figured I'd go for the full she-bang. Genesis has been pretty good so far. Of course you know the story, but it is nice to read the intros at the beginning of the chapters, as well as the items to note/consider, which are throughout the chapter. The biggest challenge has been not falling asleep during my quiet prayer. I'm so tired at 6 am, that its tough.

I get up at 5:30 on Tues, Thurs and 6:00 on Fri to do yoga. This has been really nice. Of course, I am tired at 5:30, but I'm usually alright once I am up and moving around. Mostly I feel good about myself for the rest of the day. I think the body is looking right, so I am on track to rock out in my bikini in July.

**Sidenote** That's all well and good, but I wish I could find more time in my day. It is not easy to get up early every morning, but its the best way to ensure that I get my Me things done. I really don't see my schedule opening up anytime in the future, either. Le sigh.

Next update...my Friday night pamper session. I'm off to research my options!

Hi Guys,

Let me hit you with a new segment that I am incorporating into the blog. Recipe of the Week!!!! Well essentially I have been selecting a recipe each week and preparing it for Sunday dinner. I'll post the recipe here and let you know what I thought of it.

Last night I made Rachel Ray's 'Lazy Sister Ria's Chicken'

Essentially I did the following:

Take 1 and 1/2 pounds of chicken breasts and brush them w/balsamic vinegar (I somehow missed this vinegar step, but I don't think it hurt the recipe). Then brown them on each side in a deep skillet containing about a tablespoon of EVOO over med-high heat. Remove the chicken from the pan once each side has browned.

I then added another tablespoon of EVOO to the pan, and laid out a layer of thin sliced and peeled white potatoes (about 2 potatoes) as well as thin sliced white onions (about 1/2 of a large onion). Over this mixture I shook on some McCormick's Steak seasoning, but salt and pepper should work too. I let this mixture brown on both sides being sure to keep the layer thin.

Once the potatoes and onions were brown, I added a layer of thinly sliced zucchini (1 small zucchini). Then I added the chicken breasts back into the pan (on top of the potatoes, onions, and zucchini), as well as about 1/2 cup of chicken broth. I sprinkled on another layer of the steak seasoning, and covered the entire mixture in crushed tomatoes (1 28oz can). Lastly, I topped the sauce w/a sprinkling of chopped basil and oregano.

I covered the entire mixture and let it cook until the chicken and potatoes were thoroughly cooked (about 10 - 15 mins). I finished the dish by topping it with shredded low-fat mozzarella cheese. (The recipe called for the dish to be placed under the broiler for about a minute to brown the cheese, but I don't have a cast iron skillet. I just re-covered the dish until the steam melted the cheese. Next time I will just add the cheese once the chicken has been dished onto the plate.) I served the final dish w/buttered (I can't believe its not butter) whole wheat bread.

It was yummy! It was supposed to be a 30 min meal, but that doesn't include prep time. If you add in the prep, then it will be about 45 mins the 1st time around. It will probably get faster in the future, though. I squeezed about 5 servings out of the dish. I will definitely make this again in the future.

Taking time out for yourself...do you do it? I mean life is just soooo hectic that even when you are running your own errands, you still aren't really taking time just for YOU.

Here's what I mean...on Sunday I went to Church (now I do consider that to be 'Me' time), then I went to Blockbuster, Walgreens, Radio Shack, and Ikea. Of course, these were all of my errands, but only one was really meant to nurture, calm, and strengthen my Self. I find that this is how most of my days go. I work, run errands, complete tasks, etc, but at the end of the day there isn't much that I can say that I did to truly take care of Me. I know that some of you must feel the same way when you think about it (even if you're too tough to really admit it).

So I'm on a mission to really work on and care for Me. Ok, so I've said that, but what does it mean.

1.Well I've been doing yoga in the AM before I head to work. This is kind of a catch 22 b/c it does get my day off to a good start, but it also cuts into my sleep, which I consider to be Very Important Me time. However, I like it, so I think I'll keep it in the routine. What else...?

2. Well I talked about taking more advantage of my weekends. I think this is really a balance. Sometime laying on the couch and flipping through the channels is just what I need to recuperate. However, when I have the energy, then I definitely want to spend time walking, reading, and meditating at the lake front.

3. The thing that I am most looking forward to is the bi-weekly pamper sessions that I am going to begin. As some of you know, I rarely pay to get my nails professionally manicured/pedicured and I never get facial treatments. While my bank account is thanking me for this, my nails and face are punishing me. So I am on a mission to find a few 'at home' routines that will get the job done. According to this month's Shape Magazine you can perform many of the same treatments at home for up to a year for the same price as one treatment at a spa. Sounds good to me. Here are some tricks that you can try at home too.

4. Now what is going to benefit me most (and prob should be at the top of my list). Is increasing the amount of time that I spend praying and reading my Bible. Currently I pray about 3 times a day. However its usually on the run (when I get into the car in the morning and evening), or when I'm not 100% focused (before I fall asleep at night). Where I want to get to is an additional period of quiet Bible reading, reflection and prayer. I'm not going to say that it will be every night b/c my mind is a bit too scattered for that. However, I do want to incorporate it with a focus similar to my exercise habits (meaning not purely at my convenience). I need to come up with a schedule and commit to it. Maybe I will commit to my 5:30 wake ups and do yoga 3 mornings of the week and read the Bible and pray the other 2 mornings of the week. I'll give it a shot this week and let you know how it goes.

Anyway, are you taking time to honor and care for yourself? If not, then you should be. Think about the areas that you have been neglecting yourself. What do you want to focus on and try to incorporate? Try committing to these things for 3 weeks. If they don't work, then try something different. However, make a diligent effort to focusing on you, and I think that you'll find that you like the changes you see/feel.
